ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team split its two games at Emporia State's Six-State Classic on Sunday defeating Sioux Falls 6-4 in its opening game of the day and fell to Concordia-St. Paul 12-2 in five innings in game two at the Trusler Sports Complex.
Game 1 – UMSL 6 Sioux Falls 4
The Cougars (4-4) jumped out the early lead with two runs in the home half of the first. Emma Barta led off the game with a single to right and scored on Meghan Jochimsen's triple to right center. Riley Schwisow drove in Jochimsen with a one out single to right center.
The Tritons (2-1) got a run back in the top of the second.
Gwyn Miller reached on a throwing error by Hannah Fry to start the inning and advanced all the way to third on the error.
Maddie Snemis drove in Miller with a two-out single through the right side of the infield.
UMSL took the lead in the fourth scoring two runs on two hits and an error. Snemis drove in Miller with the tying run with a single to short.
Irene Travis followed with a single to center that brought home
Mia Boyd with the go-ahead run.
The Tritons tacked on two more runs in the sixth.
Katie Schaake walked to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Snemis and scored on Travis' double down the left field line.
Simi Spahiev drove in Travis with a single to the second baseman.
USF used a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning to cut UMSL's lead to one. Damaris Cuevas drove in Makenzie Weber with a double to center and Alannah Naumann drove in Taryn Wagner with a pinch hit single up the middle.
The Tritons added an insurance run in the seventh as Miller scored on a fielding error by the center fielder.
Schaake set down the Cougars in order in the home half of the seventh to earn the save and seal the victory.
UMSL outhit USF 9-7 in the contest and was led by Travis with three hits while Snemis and
Courtney Settles had two apiece.
Ashley Borowitz pitched the first six innings allowing four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Game 2 – Concordia-St. Paul 12 UMSL 2 five innings
In the Tritons second game of the day the Golden Bears (3-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead two batters into the game. Alexis Monty led off the game with a single up the middle and scored on Riley Rosenthal's double to center.
CSP sent 11 batters to the plate in the second scoring seven runs on five hits and an error. Monty had the big hit in the inning driving in two with a double to right center that made it 3-0. Sydney Pelzer drove in the final two runs of the frame with a single to left.
UMSL loaded the bases with no out in the fourth and scored two runs on Miller's two-out double to center.
The Golden Bears scored their final four runs of the contest in the fifth on four hits.
The Tritons were outhit in the game 13-3 and were led by Snemis, Travis and Miller with a hit each.
Lexi Sherrick took the loss giving up six runs on six hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
UMSL is back in action next weekend at the Independence Bank Blue Bridge Battle at Deaconess Park in Evansville, Ind. The Tritons are scheduled to take on Ohio Dominican at 2 p.m. and Davenport at 4 p.m. on Friday.
