Game 2 – UMSL 9 Kentucky Wesleyan 0 5 innings
UMSL (5-4) jumped out to the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first.
Maddie Snemis reached on an error by the third baseman to start the game. She advanced to second on a ground out back to the circle and scored on
McKenzie Lamos' single.
The Tritons extended their lead in the third on
Mia Boyd's two out pinch-hit grand slam scoring Lamos,
Courtney Settles and
Gwyn Miller to make it 5-0.
UMSL added four more in the fourth. Settles drove in
Irene Travis with a double to left to make it 6-0. Lamos scored as
Jamie Widule reached on an error by the third baseman and
Megan Russell drove in the final two runs with a single to center.
That was all the run support that
Ashley Borowitz needed as she held Kentucky Wesleyan's (4-6) bats in check giving up just three singles while striking out four and didn't walk a batter in five innings to improve to 4-2 on the season.
The Tritons finished with seven hits in the contest and were led by Lamos, Settles and Russell with two hits each.
Game 1 – Northwood 2 UMSL 0
The first game of the day was a pitcher's duel between
Lexi Sherrick and Brittani Mutter as each pitcher threw up zeros for the first five innings.
The Timberwolves (5-3) broke through against Sherrick with two runs in the sixth. They loaded the bases courtesy of two hit by pitches and a single. Gianna Fantin got the better of Sherrick as she hit the ninth pitch of the at-bat back up the middle into center field bringing home Saylar Cuthrell and Delanie Gale with the lone runs of the contest.
UMSL threatened in the seventh putting the tying runs on with two out but Mutter got Snemis to ground out to short to end the game.
The Tritons finished the contest with six hits and were led by Travis and Sherrick with two hits apiece. Sherrick took the loss giving up the two runs on seven hits while striking out five in six innings pitched to drop to 1-2 on the season.
UMSL returns to the diamond on Friday (March 1) taking on Davenport in the McKendree Bearcat Classic at 1 p.m. at the O'Fallon Family Sports Park in O'Fallon, Ill.
