Stokes Buzzer Beater Lifts UMSL Past Greyhounds

ST. LOUIS – Jalysa Stokes hit a game-winning shot from just inside the top of the key with no time left to give the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team a 58-56 win over the University of Indianapolis on Thursday evening at the Mark Twain Building.

With the win, the Tritons (13-14, 11-10 GLVC) move 0.05 points ahead of the Greyhounds (13-14, 10-11 GLVC) for the final spot in the Great Lakes Valley's Point Rating System. The PRS determines the eight teams that advance to next week's GLVC Tournament. It's still a tight race with four teams battling for the two final spots in the tournament heading into the final day of the regular season on Saturday.

Both teams got off to a sluggish start combining to shot 25 percent from the floor in the opening quarter but the difference was UIndy's three-point shooting as three of their four field goals were from beyond the arc resulting in a 12-9 lead at the end of the frame.

The Hounds extended their lead to six early in the second stanza on a three from Liv Becker but UMSL responded with a 15-3 run over the next nine minutes to take a 24-18 lead after a jumper from Emerson Weller with 0:38 left in the half. UIndy cut the deficit to four on two free throws from Jada Patton with 0:05 left but Stokes was fouled on a last second three and hit all three free throws to give the Tritons a seven-point lead at the half.

UMSL opened the third quarter scoring seven of the first eight points to build its largest lead of the night at 34-21 after a three-pointer from Audrey Martinez-Stewart. The Tritons still led by double digits for most of the quarter but a late run from the Hounds cut UMSL's lead to two after a jumper from Patton with 0:27 left in the frame. Martinez-Stewart hit a step back three right before the buzzer to give the Tritons a five-point cushion heading into the final 10 minutes.

UMSL extended its lead to seven midway through the fourth quarter but UIndy wouldn't go away pulling to within one in the final minute after a layup from Patricia Chikamba. The Tritons had a chance to extend their lead to three with 0:27 remaining but Martinez-Stewart missed both free throws and Alex Wolff was called for a foul on the rebound sending Patton to the foul line on the other end.

Patton made the first but missed the second and Wolff secured the rebound setting UMSL up with the final shot.

The Tritons called a timeout to advance the ball into the front court. Martinez-Stewart handed the ball off to Stokes and she began to make her drive in the final five seconds. She was cut off but hoisted up an off balance shot as the buzzer sounded and it swished through the net setting off a celebration on the floor.

After reviewing the play, the officials determined the shot got off in time and counted the bucket for Stokes only field goal of the contest.

UMSL finished the game shooting 41.7 percent (21-for-51) from the floor including 2-of-7 from three but shot only 43 percent at the foul line. Wolff led the Tritons with 12 points while Mara Rieder added 11 points and seven blocked shots and Morgan Ramthun finished with nine points and 12 rebounds.

The Greyhounds shot 36 percent (21-for-59) from the field including 6-of-15 from three and shot 67 percent at the charity stripe. Patton finished with a game-high 19 points while Jada Haines finished with 10 points.

UMSL hosts Lewis in its final home contest of the season this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
