ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's team was swept by No. 15 Washburn in its spring opener on Saturday afternoon at the Topeka Country Club in Topeka, Kan. The Tritons drop to 2-1 while the Ichabods move to 1-0.
Washburn won all three doubles matches to take the opening point of the contest. UMSL's number one doubles team of
Juan Vigil and
Raphael Kerndl fell to the top ranked doubles team in the country Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon 6-2.
Gavin Sohn and
Tanin Ramnath lost to Matthew Earle and Daniel Bird 6-2 in the third doubles match and
Jose Mayorga and
Joshua Mackey was beaten by Tommy Cecchetti and Sebastian Pjontek 6-3.
In the singles competition Mayorga lost to Hammes in straight sets 6-1, 6-2, Vigil fell against Pavlos Parson 6-4, 6-3, Kerndel was defeated by No. 11 Rendon 6-3, 6-1. Sohn lost Cecchetti 6-1, 6-1, Mackey came up short against Bird 6-3, 6-3 and Ramnath fell to Earle 6-3, 6-4.
The Tritons are back in action on Sunday as they take on No. 20 Northwest Missouri State at Genesis Indoor Courts in St. Joseph, Mo., beginning at 10 a.m.
