ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team swept Lewis 9-6 and 11-9 in its doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field. The Tritons improve to 11-9, 3-4 GLVC while the Flyers fall to 8-10, 3-4 GLVC.
Game 1 – UMSL 9 Lewis 6
UMSL took the early lead with a run in the first of the opener.
Dane Stevenson led off the game with a walk, went to second on
Braedon Stoakes' ground out to third and scored on
Barrett Rose's single to center.
Lewis countered in the second scoring all three of its runs on Cain Headrick's home run over the bullpen in right for his second roundtripper of the season.
The Tritons tied the game with a pair of runs in the third.
Mitchell Green brought home Rose with a sac fly to center and
Logan McIntyre scored when the Flyers tried to throw behind
Zach Beatty at second but a muffed throw allowed McIntyre to score the tying run.
Lewis retook the lead in the fourth but UMSL answered with two in its half of the fourth on Green's two out two-run single through the left side of the infield.
The Flyers regained the lead in the fifth on Mikey Kocen's two-run homer to left center to make it 6-5.
The Tritons scored twice in their half of the fifth to take the lead for good. Stoakes drove in the tying run with a groundout to short and Rose drove in the go-ahead run with a single to right center.
UMSL added two insurance runs in the sixth. Green scored on a balk to make it 8-6 and
Andrew Buescher scored on
Jake Isaac's triple to center. Isaacs tried for an inside the park home run but was thrown out at the plate.
The Tritons had nine hits in the opener and were led by Rose, Green and Isaacs with two apiece.
Dustin Hagens threw the first five innings giving up six runs on five hits while striking out six to improve to 2-3 on the year.
Trent Anderson pitched the final two innings giving up no runs on a hit with two strikeouts and two walks to earn his second save of the year.
Game 2 – UMSL 11 Lewis 9
UMSL struck first in the nightcap as Stoakes hit a one out home run to straightaway center in the bottom of the first. The Tritons added three more in the second. Isaacs drove in Green with a sac fly down the left field line to make it 2-0. Stevenson made it 4-0 with a two-out two-run single to left center.
Lewis got a home run from Thomas Fox leading off the fourth to cut UMSL's lead to 4-1.
The Tritons added four runs on four hits and two errors in the home half of the fourth. UMSL loaded the bases with one out in the inning.
Garrett Strenger scored the first run of the inning on Stevenson's ground ball to short that was booted by the shortstop. Stoakes followed with a single up the middle scoring Buescher and Isaacs and sent Stevenson to third. Stevenson scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-1.
The Flyers kept fighting scoring five times in the fifth getting a solo home run from Angelo Cantelo and a grand slam from Chris McDevitt to cut the lead to 8-6.
UMSL added some insurance runs in the sixth. Stevenson hit a two-out single to center scoring Beatty to make it 9-6 and then Stoakes hit a two-run homer down the right field line to make it 11-6.
Lewis scored three times without the benefit of a hit in the seventh but it wouldn't be enough as
Jacob Arndt got the final out to secure the win and his second save of the year.
The Tritons had 10 hits in the contest and were led by Stoakes with three while Stevenson and Strenger had two hits each. Stoakes drove in five runs and Stevenson had four RBI.
Zach Haygood got the start on the mound and went the first 4.2 innings giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out three to get the win and improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Flyers and UMSL wrapup their four-game series with a single game on Sunday at noon at the UMSL Baseball Field.
