ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team trailed 13-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth before mounting a comeback capped by
Andrew Buescher's walk-off double with two out in the bottom of the ninth to earn a 17-16 win over Hillsdale on Saturday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field.
The Tritons improve to 6-4 while the Chargers fall to 3-7.
Hillsdale scored in each of the first six innings to take that nine-run advantage. UMSL got three in the third and one in the fourth to cut the Charger lead in half heading into the fifth.
Hillsdale added three more in the fifth and two in the sixth. The Tritons put up back-to-back five run innings in the sixth and seventh to take a 14-13 lead when
Dane Stevenson scored on a wild pitch.
The Chargers got home runs from Will Millard and Joe Hardenbergh in the eighth to retake the lead at 16-14.
UMSL's rally in the ninth started with a one out walk to Stevenson followed by
Bryce Kulinski getting hit with a pitch to put the tying runs on base.
Braedon Stoakes reached on a fielding error by the short stop to load the bases.
Mitchell Green, hitting for
Zach Beatty, reached on a catcher's interference to bring home Stevenson and cut the deficit to 16-15.
Logan McIntyre got ahead 3-0 in his at-bat but Andrew George came back to strike him out for the second out of the frame. Buescher fell behind in the count 1-2 and then hit one to deep center that bounced off the warning track bringing home Kulinski and Stoakes to end the game.
The Tritons finished with 15 hits in the contest and were led by
Garrett Strenger with four while Stoakes added three and Buescher finished with two.
Zach Haygood pitched the final two innings giving up one run on one hit and struck out two to earn his first win of the season.
UMSL returns to the diamond on Sunday afternoon hosting Saginaw Valley at 1 p.m. at the UMSL Baseball Field.
