ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team split its two games on Saturday defeating Purdue Northwest 6-2 in eight innings but fell to Washburn 4-2 in the McKendree Bearcat Classic at the O'Fallon Family Sports Park in O'Fallon, Ill.
Game 1 – UMSL 6 Purdue Northwest 2 8 innings
The Tritons (7-6) struck first with a run in the top of the third. With one out,
Irene Travis singled to right and advanced all the way to third on an error by the right fielder.
Simia Spahiev followed with a single up the middle bringing home Travis.
Jamie Widule then doubled to center but UMSL couldn't add on as a ground out and a strikeout ended the inning.
Ashley Borowitz was perfect through five innings retiring the first 15 hitters she faced. The Pride (8-7) broke up Borowitz's bid for a perfect game in the sixth. Amanda DeBoer led off the inning with a single up the middle and went to second on a sacrifice. DeBoer moved to third on a groundout to second and scored on Kylie Dugan's single through the left side of the infield to tie the game.
Neither side scored in the seventh to send the game to the eighth. The Triton bats came alive in the inning scoring five runs on four hits and two errors.
Gwyn Miller drove in Widule with the go-ahead run.
Maddie Snemis scored on an error by the right fielder on
Mia Boyd's pinch hit single to make it 3-1.
Courtney Settles doubled to left center scoring Miller and Travis capped the inning with a two-run triple to right center.
PNW got a run in its half of the eighth on Myah Stuckey's RBI single but it wouldn't be enough.
UMSL outhit the Pride 12-5 in the contest and was led by Travis with four hits while Settles added two. Borowitz went the distance giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out eight to improve to 5-3.
Game 2 – Washburn 4 UMSL 2
In the Tritons second game of the day they fell behind Washburn (18-4) early. The Ichabods scored in the home half of the first as Kaylee Wagner singled home Marrit Mead for the first run of the contest.
UMSL tied the game in the top of the second. With one out, Snemis beat out an infield single to second and went to second on a throwing error by Alexis Tagnuma. Snemis scored later in the inning after a
pair of wild pitches.
Washburn regained the lead in its half of the second as Autynn Schreiner singled through the right side of the infield to drive in Mead with the go-ahead run.
The Tritons tied the game in the top of the fourth on Spahiev's home run to lead off the inning.
The Ichabods broke the 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the sixth getting RBI singles from Hailey Neira and Jaycee Ginter to regain the lead.
UMSL brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh but was unable to tie the game.
The Tritons had five hits in the contest and were led by Snemis with two while Settles, Travis and Spahiev had one each.
Lexi Sherrick pitched the final four innings and took the loss giving up two runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts and two walks to fall to 1-3.
UMSL plays its final game in the McKendree Bearcat Classic on Sunday taking on Missouri Western at noon.
