ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's tennis team was edged by Rockhurst 4-3 on Saturday at the UMSL Tennis Courts. The Tritons drop to 3-3 while the Hawks move to 6-1.
Rockhurst swept the doubles portion to take the first point of the match. UMSL's number one team of
Anna Domingo and
Maja Lietzau lost to Sofia Vadespino and Zuzanna Szmyd 7-6 (7-4).
Hannah Tse and
Anna Favaron were defeated by Ella Coleman and Marina Magai 6-3 and
Lauren Sweeney and
Aleksandra Lopez fell to Maria Baez and Dani Lentisco 6-4.
The sides split the singles portion with each winning three matches. Domingo dropped the opening set to Coleman 6-1 and had to retire due to injury in the number one singles contest. Lietzau got the Tritons on the board defeating Valdespino 6-3, 6-0 at number two singles. In the No. 3 singles contest it was Tse beating Magai in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Lopez followed with a win over Szmyd 6-3 and 7-5 in the fourth singles match.
Rockhurst took the final two singles matches to earn the win. Lentisco defeated Favaron 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Sweeney fell to Baez 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) in the final match.
UMSL continues its four-match homestand next Saturday taking on Michigan Tech at 10 a.m. at the UMSL Tennis Courts.
