ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team dropped its series opener at No. 21 Maryville 14-4 in seven innings on Thursday afternoon at Weber Field in St. Louis.
The Tritons (16-10, 8-5) scored the first run of the game in their first at-bat. With one out,
Braedon Stoakes and
Barrett Rose hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corner. Stoakes scored the first run on a wild pitch with
Justin Simard batting.
The Saints (18-7, 11-2 GLVC) tied the game in their half of the first as Jack Zebig scored on Michael Gould's sacrifice fly to right. Maryville scored three times in the second to take the lead. Josh Herget scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1. Colin Bergmann doubled down the left field line to drive in Matt Schuler and Dominic Sharp singled to center to drive in Bergmann.
Jacob Hager hit a two-run home run in the third to extend the Saint lead to 6-1.
UMSL got a run back in the fifth as Rose doubled to left center to bring home Stoakes.
Maryville put up three more runs in the fifth. Bunton walked with the bases loaded to bring home Hager. Zebig singled through the right side of the infield scoring Schuler and Sharp hit a sacrifice fly to center.
Jake Isaacs pulled the Tritons within 9-4 with a two-run single to right center scoring
Bryce Kulinski and
Logan McIntyre.
The Saints scored five times in the seventh highlighted by Elias Stevens three-run home run to left to pick up the run-rule victory.
UMSL finished with nine hits in the contest and were led by Stoakes, Rose and
Garrett Strenger with two hits each.
RJ Elmore took the loss giving up six runs on 10 hits with a pair of strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched to fall to 2-4 on the season.
The Tritons and Maryville continue their four-game series with a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 p.m. at Weber Field.
