ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball tied the game with 2.3 left in regulation on a jumper in the paint from
Terrell Kabala but ultimately fell in overtime to second seeded Upper Iowa 91-84 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinal contest on Thursday evening at Hyland Arena in St. Charles, Mo.
The Peacocks (21-8) jumped out to an early five-point lead but the Tritons, seeded seventh, rallied to take a three-point lead on a three-pointer from Kabala with 4:39 left in the opening stanza. UMSL's lead to grew to as many as five in the frame after another three from Kabala with 2:32 later.
Upper Iowa closed the half on a 6-1 run to cut the Triton lead to one at the break.
UMSL opened the second half scoring nine of the first 14 points to regain its five-point lead after five straight points from
Matt Enright.
The Peacocks used a 16-4 run over the next 5:40 to build a seven-point advantage after a three from Jake Hilmer.
The Tritons still trailed by seven with 8:44 left after a layup by Nick Reid but chipped away at the deficit pulling to within one on a jumper from Enright with 4:00 to go.
Two free throws from Hilmer gave the Peacocks a three-point lead but
Savon Wykle answered on the other end with a dunk to cut the lead to one on the next possession.
Enright gave UMSL the lead back hitting a pullup jumper in the lane with 0:55 but a foul on the ensuing possession sent Hilmer back to the line and he hit both free throws to put Upper Iowa back in front.
The Tritons had a chance to retake the lead but a turnover gave the ball back to the Peacocks.
UMSL was forced to foul and sent Noah King to the line for a 1-and-1. He hit the first but missed the second giving UIU a 73-71 lead.
The Tritons got the ball in the hands of Kabala who drove into the middle of the lane and hit a pull up jumper to tie the contest.
The Peacocks had a desperation heave at the buzzer that was off the mark to send the game to the extra frame.
UMSL led 76-75 in the extra frame after three free throws from
Emanuel Prospere II but back-to-back three's from Reid gave Upper Iowa a five-point lead and the Tritons wouldn't get closer than that the rest of the game as the Peacocks sealed the game at the foul line hitting 10-of-12 free throws in the final 1:02 of play.
The Tritons finished the game shooting 46 percent (29-for-63) from the field including 5-of-18 from three and shot 78 percent at the foul line and outrebounded Upper Iowa 43-to-34. Enright led five UMSL players in double figures with 19 points. He was joined by Kabala with 18 points, Prospere II added 17 points, Wykle had 13 points and
Troy Glover II finished with a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
The Peacocks shot 43 percent (26-for-60) from the floor including 6-of-22 from three and shot 87 percent at the charity stripe. Hilmer led all scorers with 32 points while King added 21 points. Reid finished with 13 points, Kyle Hrncir had 11 points and Caleb Delzell dropped home 10 points.
UMSL finishes its season with an overall record of 13-16 including 11-9 in GLVC play.
