ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team extended its winning streak to three games sweeping its doubleheader against Quincy on Sunday afternoon at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex in Quincy, Ill. The Tritons took the opener 4-2 and won the nightcap 10-2 in six innings.
UMSL evens its overall record at 24-24 and its conference record at 11-11 while the Hawks fall to 15-31, 4-18 GLVC.
Game 1 – UMSL 4 Quincy 2
The Tritons jumped to an early lead scoring three runs on four hits in the second inning.
Katie Schaake drove in the first run with an RBI double to left center scoring
Maddie Illingworth and then
Megan Russell followed with a double down the left field line scoring
Gwyn Miller and Schaake.
Quincy got a run back in the third on Maddy Findley's RBI double to right center scoring Isabella Shields.
Lexie Sherrick left the tying runs stranded as she retired Avery Funk on a pop up to Miller to end the inning.
UMSL added an insurance run in the sixth as Miller doubled to right center scoring Sherrick who had reached on an error to make it 4-1.
The Hawks cut the Triton lead in half with a run in their half of the sixth as Allison Kaiser walked with the bases loaded to bring home Ryleigh Jones. Schaake came on in relief of Sherrick and struck out Allyson Maynard to end the inning.
Quincy's first two hitters reached safely to start the seventh but Schaake got Funk to line into a double play to
McKenzie Lamos at third as Lindsey Fischer was doubled off first and then struck out Kenzie Moss to end the game.
UMSL had eight hits in the contest and was led by Miller with three while
Irene Travis added two. Sherrick went the first 5.2 innings giving up two runs on seven hits with a strikeout to even her record at 6-6. Schaake pitched the final 1.1 striking out two and walking a batter to earn her first save of the season.
Game 2 – UMSL 10 Quincy 2 six innings
The Tritons got off the gates quick in the nightcap scoring three runs on three hits in the top of the first. With one out,
Courtney Settles singled to left bringing home
May Pasqualini with the first run of the contest. Illingworth made it 2-0 with a single to right center that scored Lamos and Sherrick hit a sacrifice fly down the right field line in foul territory that scored Settles.
The Hawks got single runs in the second and third inning. Funk grounded out back to Schaake for the second out of the second but it scored Jessie Martin on the play. Quincy's second run scored on a bases loaded walk with two out in the third.
UMSL added three runs in the fourth. Travis doubled home Russell and Lamos hit a two-run single that scored Pasqualini and Travis. The Tritons put it away with four runs in the sixth highlighted by Lamos two-run double that scored Pasqualini and Travis.
UMSL finished with 11 hits in game two and were led by Lamos who was 4-4 with two runs scored and four RBI.
Ashley Borowitz pitched the final 3.1 innings in relief of Schaake giving up no runs on a hit and struck out three to earn the win and improve to 12-13 on the season.
The Tritons wrap up the regular season next weekend hosting Drury and Southwest Baptist in a pair of doubleheaders next Saturday and Sunday at the UMSL Softball Field.
