ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team scored 30 runs in its doubleheader sweep of Upper Iowa on Saturday at Maryville University's Weber Field. The Tritons won the opener 21-16 and the nightcap 9-2. UMSL moves to 28-16 overall including 19-11 in the GLVC while the Peacocks fall to 9-32, 6-24 GLVC.
Game 1 – UMSL 21 Upper Iowa 16
The Tritons jumped out to an early lead scoring four times in the top of the first highlighted by
Logan McIntyre's two-run single to right center.
Upper Iowa countered with six runs in its half of the first with the big blow being Justin Baehler's three-run home run to left. The Peacocks added another run in the second on Gabe Bombardier's solo home run to right.
UMSL rallied scoring seven times in the third inning.
Andrew Buescher hit a three-run home run in the frame while
Barrett Rose drove in two with a single to left and
Jake Isaacs and
Bryce Kulinski each had RBI singles.
The Tritons added five more in the fifth. Rose hit a two-run home run to left center and
Justin Simard and McIntyre each added RBI singles.
Upper Iowa took advantage of an UMSL error in the fifth inning to score seven runs as it hit three home runs in the stanza. Baehler and Bombardier each hit their second home runs in the contest and Brock Zimmer hit a three-run home run.
UMSL pushed its lead to three as
Garrett Strenger drove in a run with a bases loaded walk to bring home Rose in the sixth.
The Peacocks kept battling scoring twice in the sixth to cut the Triton lead to one. Upper Iowa had a chance to regain the lead loading the bases with one out in the seventh but
Trent Anderson came on to get the final two outs to keep UMSL in front.
The Tritons sealed the victory scoring four runs in the ninth.
UMSL had 19 hits in the contest and were led by Kulinski who went 4-7 at the dish. Six different Tritons had at least two hits in the contest.
Cody Brooks pitched the fifth to earn his second victory and improve to 2-1 on the season. Anderson pitched the final 2.2 innings for his sixth save of the season.
Game 2 – UMSL 9 Upper Iowa 2
The Tritons jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first in the nightcap. Kulinski led off the inning with a single to first, went to second on Rose's sacrifice bunt, stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
The Peacocks tied the game in the fourth on Gunner Wicklund's solo home run to center field.
UMSL retook the lead scoring five times in the fifth. Rose drove in
Jake Isaacs with a ground out to second. Buescher drove in two more with a double to left and
Mitchell Green hit a two-run home run to left for the final runs of the frame.
Upper Iowa got a run back in the sixth as Bombardier scored on a ground out to second.
The Tritons added three more in the seventh. Green doubled to left center scoring Buescher. Simard brought him home with a triple down the right field line and McIntyre doubled down the left field line to bring home Simard.
UMSL finished with 10 hits in game two with Buescher, Green and
Kameron Laskowski each recording two hits.
Zach Haygood gave up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts in six innings pitched to improve to 7-1 on the season.
The Tritons and Peacocks wrap-up their four-game series with another doubleheader on Sunday starting at 12 p.m. at the UMSL Baseball Field.
