MARION, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team was eliminated from the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament with a 5-2 loss to Lewis on Friday afternoon at Mtn. Dew Park in Marion, Ill.
The Flyers (27-25), seeded eighth, took advantage of a pair of Triton errors to load the bases in the second inning against
RJ Elmore. Thomas Fox made them pay clearing the bases with a double to deep left center that went in and out of
Bryce Kulinski's glove to make it 3-0.
UMSL, seeded fifth, had a chance to cut into the lead in the home half of the third. With one out,
Jake Issacs singled to right and
Barrett Rose doubled down the left field line to put two in scoring a position but a pop out and a strikeout ended the threat.
The Tritons got on the board in the fifth as
Zach Beatty led off the inning with a home run to right. Isaacs then reached on an error by the second baseman, stole second, advanced to third on Rose's fly out to right and scored on
Andrew Buescher's ground out to first.
Lewis countered with two in the top of the sixth as Michael Alt led off the inning with an infield single and scored on George Bilecki's two-run home run to right center.
UMSL narrowly missed back-to-back home runs from
Mitchell Green and
Logan Mantz as both hit balls to deep left but were caught at the fence by Cain Headrick.
The Tritons only had one baserunner reach in the final three innings as
Justin Simard led off the seventh inning to left center but that was UMSL's last hit of the contest.
The Tritons had six hits in the contest with Rose recording two of those while Isaacs, Mantz, Simard and Beatty had one apiece. Elmore took the loss giving up five runs, two earned, on eight hits with a strikeout.
UMSL finishes the season with a record of 30-22.
