UMSL Baseball Has Five Players Named to All-GLVC Team

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team had five players named to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference team as announced by the league office on Tuesday evening at an awards banquet on the eve of the 204 GLVC Baseball Championship Tournament.

Junior outfielder Braedon Stoakes and junior second baseman Andrew Buescher were named to the league's first team while senior relief pitcher Trent Anderson, junior starting pitcher Zach Haygood and junior designated hitter/first baseman Barrett Rose were selected to the second team.

Stoakes leads the Tritons in batting average (.417), hits (65), runs scored (51), triples (9) and stolen bases (23). His nine triples this season are tied for the most in a single season school history. Stoakes' 107 total bases are second most on the squad while his six home runs are fourth on the team. His nine triples are the most in the conference this season while his .417 batting average is fourth best in the league.

Buescher leads the Tritons with 12 home runs and 58 runs batted in and is hitting .343 for the season. In GLVC play, he's hitting .347 with eight home runs, nine doubles and 42 runs batted in. Buescher has an OPS of 1.070 in conference play and his 75 total bases are most on the team in league play. He's recorded at least one hit in 34 of 48 games this season and driven in at least one run in 24 contests highlighted by a season-high nine RBI game against Kentucky Wesleyan on Feb. 19.

Anderson is having the best year of his career as a Triton. He leads the team with 18 appearances and is 3-1 with a 1.77 earned run averaged and leads the team with seven saves. His seven saves are tied for seventh in a single season in the school record book and is third best in the GLVC this season. In league play, he's made 15 appearances and is 3-1 with five saves, has a 1.74 earned run average with 42 strikeouts in 31 innings pitched. Anderson struck out a season-high five hitters against Saginaw Valley on March 3 and matched that number against William Jewell and Southwest Baptist.

Haygood leads the Triton pitching staff with a 7-2 record and has a 3.72 ERA. He's made 12 appearances with eight starts, thrown three complete games and one complete game shutout. In 55.2 innings pitched he's struck out 44 batters and opponents are hitting .256 against him. His seven wins are tied for third in the GLVC this season. In conference action, Haygood sports a 6-2 record with an ERA of 3.99 and has struck out 40 batters in 49.2 innings pitched. He struck out a season-high seven batters in five innings pitched at Southwest Baptist on April 13 and followed it up with a seven-strikeout performance in a complete game effort against McKendree on April 20.

Rose is second on the team with 11 home runs, 49 RBIs and a .373 batting average. His nine doubles and 101 total bases are good for third on the team while his OPS of 1.149 is second only to Stoakes. His 31 walks are tied for the most on the team while his 15 hit by pitches leads the team. Rose has at least one hit in 35 games and has reached base successfully in 42 contests this season. In GLVC play, he's hitting .370 with seven home runs, seven doubles and has driven in 35 runs while his 29 runs scored in conference action are second most on the team behind Stoakes' 34.

The league also recognized 14 GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees, including Anderson. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced later this month.

UMSL finished the regular season with a 30-20 record and was 21-15 in the GLVC. The Tritons are the No. 5 seed in the GLVC Tournament and will begin play against No. 4 seed Quincy on Wednesday (May 8) at 9 a.m. at Mtn. Dew Park in Marion, Ill.
