LIBERTY, Mo. – The fifth ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team had five players reach double figures in kills in its 3-1 win over William Jewell at the Mabee Center in Liberty, Mo., on Saturday afternoon. The Tritons improve to 10-2, 1-1 GLVC while the Cardinals fall to 4-9, 0-2 GLVC.
UMSL opened the match on a 5-1 run but couldn't sustain it as WJC hit .333 in the stanza as it rallied to lead by as many as eight at 21-13 after Katy Garrison and Madison Grekstas blocked
Alayna Santel. The Tritons wouldn't get closer than seven as the Cardinals took the opening stanza 25-17.
UMSL trailed 18-15 in the second set and were facing an 0-2 hole in the match before ending the set on a 10-1 run including eight straight points to take the frame 25-19 and even the match at a set apiece. The Tritons hit .441 in the stanza with 18 kills while holding Jewell to a .306 hitting percentage.
The swing set saw four ties. UMSL led by three but the Cardinals closed to within 16-15 after a kill from Bella LaPorta. The Tritons pulled away thanks to a 7-0 run to build a 23-15 after an error by LaPorta. Jewell cut it to six but wouldn't get any closer as
Brooklyn Young recorded back-to-back kills to give UMSL the 25-17 set win.
The Tritons never trailed in the final stanza as it led by as many as nine points after a kill from Santel. The Cardinals wouldn't get closer than seven points the rest of the set as UMSL took the final frame 25-16.
The Tritons recorded a season-high 68 kills while hitting .378 for the contest and were led by Young and Santel with 16 kills each while
Addison Voorhees had 12 kills and
Iyannah Jackson and
Hannah Copeland finished with 11 kills each. The 16 kills for Young are a career-high.
Caitlin Bishop dished out 58 assists and had two blocks,
Skylar Weaver recorded a career-high 23 digs in the contest.
William Jewell hit .227 for the match with 43 kills against 14 errors in 128 attempts and was led by LaPorta with 13 kills and 12 digs. Samantha Thompson finished with 16 assists while Garrison added five blocks.
UMSL concludes its three-game road trip next Friday as it heads across the river to take on McKendree at 6 p.m. in Lebanon, Ill.
