Volleyball Defeats Bulldogs In Four Sets

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team extended its winning streak to six with a 3-1 win against Truman State on Saturday afternoon at Pershing Arena in Kirksville, Mo. The Tritons improve to 13-4, 6-0 GLVC while the Bulldogs drop to 6-12, 3-3 GLVC.

UMSL led by as many as six in the opening stanza but Truman rallied thanks to a 12-4 run to take a 20-18 lead after an ace from Jessie Julius. The Tritons countered getting a kill from Hannah Copeland to make it 20-19, then Copeland and Alayna Santel teamed up to block Laci Neece to even it at 20 and Caitlin Bishop added an ace to put UMSL back on top 21-20.

The Bulldogs got a kill from Lily Porter to tie it at 21 but UMSL got a block from Copeland, an ace from Lydia Hartman and back-to-back kills from Santel to win the opener 25-22.

The Tritons again jumped out to an early lead in the second set but Truman kept battling drawing to within 16-15 after a kill from Porter. That would be the closest it got though as UMSL ran off five straight points to grab a 21-15 advantage. Maggie Johnson and Iyannah Jackson had two kills apiece in that run and Johnson also added a block.

The Bulldogs fought off two set points but not a third as an attack error by Hannah Hosty gave the second stanza to UMSL.

The Tritons led 17-15 late in the third set but were unable to close it out as Truman used a 5-2 run to take a 20-19 lead on a kill from Hosty. UMSL got a kill from Santel and an ace from Hartman to retake the lead at 21-20 but it was the Bulldogs closing it out scoring five of last seven points to win 25-23 to extend the match.

The fourth set was a continuation of set three with the two sides trading points. The Tritons trailed 16-15 after an attack error from Johnson but she bounced back with a kill on the next swing to even it at 16. UMSL scored four of the next five points to grab a three-point lead on a block from Copeland.

Truman wouldn't get closer than two the rest of the way as the Tritons closed it out scoring the last three points to win 25-20.

UMSL hit .293 in the contest with 67 kills against 19 errors in 164 attempts. Santel finished with a career-high 26 kills with 15 digs, three blocks and an ace. Johnson added 16 kills and Copeland had 11 kills and seven total blocks. Bishop handed out 62 assists and Skylar Weaver recorded 22 digs.

The Bulldogs finished the match with a .218 attack percentage recording 53 kills against 19 errors in 156 chances. Hosty led Truman with 17 kills and four blocks. Tori Creason finished with 26 assists and Addy Janssen had 16 digs.

The Tritons are back in action next Friday competing at the Midwest Region Crossover at the Hammond Sportsplex in Hammond, Ind. Opponents and times will be announced on Monday.
