ST. LOUIS -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team got a penalty kick goal from
Gwen Maggard in the 81st minute to defeat Quincy 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Don Dallas Field. With the win the Tritons improve to 10-3-2, 9-1-2 GLVC while the Hawks drop to 10-3-2, 9-2-1 GLVC.
The two teams entered Sunday's contest battling for second place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings and were separated by two points at the start of play. UMSL moves into the second spot while Quincy is tied with Drury for third.
Josie Maddox opened the scoring in the 21
st minute on a through ball from
Maddie Clark.
Taylor Martin started the play with her forward pass to Clark. The goal is Maddox's team leading fifth of the season.
The Hawks tied the game in the 71
st minute off a mad scramble on a corner kick. Ella Wolfard knocked the ball past
Rylee Griffith out of the chaos, tying the game 1-1 with twenty minutes to go.
The Tritons answered 10 minutes later as
Avery Hesseldenz was fouled in the box after beating her defender to a through ball for the penalty. Maggard slotted the ball past Devin Tracy to make it 2-1 in favor of UMSL.
The Tritons outshot the Hawks 13-11 in the contest including 7-6 in shots on goal. Maddox tallied four shots, landing three on goal while Maggard added two more.

The Tritons wrap up the regular season next weekend with two road games starting on Friday (Oct. 31) against Truman State at 2:30 p.m. in Kirksville, Mo.
