ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team rallied for a 3-2 win in a thrilling five-set match against Quincy on Saturday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons improve to 11-4, 4-0 GLVC while the Hawks drop to 12-3, 3-1 GLVC.
UMSL rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the match to extend its home winning streak to 29.
The Tritons opened the match strong scoring the first four points but Quincy rallied to take the lead at 13-12 after an error by
Caitlin Bishop. UMSL rallied getting back-to-back kills from
Iyannah Jackson and
Maggie Johnson to retake the lead at 14-13. It was a lead that wouldn't be relinquished. The Tritons led by four but the Hawks got another kill from Beretti but wouldn't get any closer as UMSL scored the final four points of the stanza to win 25-18.
Quincy led by as many as five points late in the second frame but a Triton rally tied the set at 23 after an ace from
Skylar Weaver. The Hawks got to set point first after a kill from Selin Turgut but a kill from Jackson and an ace from
Alayna Santel gave UMSL a 25-24 lead. The Tritons were unable to close it out as Quincy scored the final three points to win 27-25.
The swing set saw eight ties and two lead changes. UMSL led by as many as three in the stanza but the Hawks rallied to even it at 21 on a kill from Janelle Pye-Blacknard. The Tritons regained the lead after an error by Turgut but Quincy scored the final four points to win the frame 25-22 on a kill from Pye-Blacknard.
UMSL dominated the fourth set hitting .250 in it and held the Hawks to a negative .057 attack percentage. The Tritons led 19-10 but Quincy wouldn't go without a fight pulling to within 19-14 after a kill from Pye-Blacknard. That would be the closest it got as UMSL ended the set scoring six of the last 11 points to win it 25-19 and force the winner take-all fifth set.
The two sides went back-and-forth in the finale with neither side having more than a two-point lead. The Tritons held an 11-9 lead but the Hawks rallied with three straight points to take a 12-11 advantage on ace from Pye-Blacknard.
UMSL countered with back-to-back kills from Santel but Quincy punched back getting consecutive kills from Beretti to reach match point first at 14-13. The Tritons fought off match point as Santel stuffed Beretti and then Jackson gave UMSL the lead with a kill.
The Hawks staved off match point as Beretti recorded her 23rd kill of the contest to even it at 15. A service error from Elena Kasavica gave the Tritons a 16-15 lead and their second match point. They were able to close it out as Jackson and Johnson stuffed Beretti to give UMSL the 17-15 victory.
The Tritons hit .257 for the match with 71 kills against 22 errors in 191 attempts and were led by Santel with 18 kills while
Bridget Cassady added 17, Jackson had 15 and Johnson finished with 14. Bishop had a career-high 66 assists, Jackson, Santel and
Hannah Copeland had five blocks apiece and Weaver had a match-high 28 digs.
Quincy had a .172 attack percentage with 66 kills against 29 errors in 215 attempts. Beretti led all players with her 23 kills while Pye-Blacknard added 15 kills and 23 digs and Zeynep Cetin finished with 10 kills. Kasavica had 54 assists and Turgut finished with four blocks.
UMSL returns to the court next Friday as it travels to Fayette, Iowa, to take on Upper Iowa at 6 p.m. at Dorman Gymnasium.
