ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team dropped the St. Louis Derby to crosstown rival Maryville 5-1 at Lonnie Folks Field on Sunday afternoon in St. Louis. The Tritons fall to 2-3-4, 1-2-3 GLVC while the Saints improve to 5-4-1, 4-3 GLVC.
Maryville struck first with a goal in the 22nd minute. Jan Fulnek struck a shot that hit off the right post and Marcos Ayelo was there for the rebound, blasting it into the upper corner.
UMSL had a chance to tie the game shortly after as a ball fell to
Roman Ryabchenko in the penalty area but his shot attempt was blocked.
The Saints struck again five minutes later as Tommy Barrell found Jacob Lund-Iversen who put it away. A little over a minute later it was Lund-Iversen again scoring with an assist from Brendon Fournier.
The Tritons cut the deficit to 3-1 in the 57th minute with
Max Matarelli scoring his first collegiate goal beating the keeper to the high left side with an assist from
Pablo Nodar.
Maryville regained its three-goal lead in the 64th minute with Ayelo scoring his second goal of the game with another assist from Fulnek. The Saints final goal came 0:19 later as Fulnek took a shot towards goal that
Will Winkler saved but couldn't control the rebound and
Connor Randel tried to settle it but inadvertently knocked it in for an own goal.
UMSL was outshot in the contest 15-8 including 9-2 in shots on goal. Winkler made a career-high five saves in the contest.
Benjamin Ocampo led the Tritons with two shots in the contest.
The Tritons return home to face McKendree this Friday (Oct. 10) at 7:30 p.m. at Don Dallas Field.
