ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team rallied for a thrilling 3-2 win over Lewis on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Ill. The Tritons extend their winning streak to 13 and improve to 20-4 overall, including 10-0 in the GLVC while the Flyers are 13-11, 4-5 GLVC.
It's the fifth time in the last seven seasons that UMSL has had at least 20 wins in a season.
The opening set was tied at 10 when Lewis took control with a 9-3 run. The Tritons pulled to within 20-15 but wouldn't get closer as the Flyers won the opener 25-19. Lewis hit .319 in the frame while holding UMSL to a .125 hitting percentage.
The Tritons led by as many as six in the second set but a late run by the Flyers saw them draw to within 18-17 on a kill from Sarah Newberry. UMSL responded with a 6-2 run to reach set point at 24-19 after a block by
Iyannah Jackson and
Bridget Cassady. Lewis fought off the first set point but not a second as a service error gave the Tritons the 25-20 win to even the match at a set apiece.
In the swing set, UMSL led 19-9 after an ace from
Skylar Weaver but was unable to close out the set as the Flyers went on a 13-3 run to even the frame at 22. The Tritons retook the lead on a kill from
Maggie Johnson but Lewis closed the set scoring four of the last five points to win 26-24.
The fourth set was even at 13 when UMSL made its run, scoring 10 of the next 13 points and wouldn't look back on its way to the 25-17 victory. Jackson and
Alayna Santel combined for 11 of the Tritons 16 kills in the stanza.
UMSL led 10-6 in the fifth and final set but the Flyers wouldn't go without a fight countering with a 4-1 run to pull within 11-10. The Tritons didn't yield, closing the match scoring the final four points to win 15-10 completing the comeback. Santel had four kills in the deciding set while Cassady chipped in with three.
UMSL finished the match hitting .224 with 75 kills against 26 errors in 219 attempts and were led by Santel and Johnson with 20 kills apiece. Cassady, Jackson and
Hannah Copeland had 13, 12 and 10 kills respectively.
Caitlin Bishop had 63 assists; Weaver had a season-high 32 digs and Jackson added four blocks.
Lewis hit .226 in the contest with 62 kills against 19 errors in 190 swings and was led by Ann-Kelly Velikov with 13 kills while Lauren Buxton added 11 kills. Lily King had 27 assists; Emma O'Neill finished with 31 digs and Newberry had a match-high seven blocks.
The Tritons begin their final homestand of the 2025 regular season on Friday (Nov. 7) hosting McKendree at 6 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
