ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team clinched its third Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season title in the last four years with a 3-1 win over Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons run their winning streak to 16 and improve to 23-4 including 13-0 in the GLVC while the Hawks fall to 20-9, 11-2 GLVC.
UMSL never trailed in the opening set as it started the match on a 10-3 run and led by as many as seven points in the frame. Rockhurst got to within three halfway through but couldn't overcome the Triton attack as UMSL hit .357 in the stanza with 21 kills and were led by
Alayna Santel and
Maggie Johnson with seven kills apiece.
The second set was all Hawks as it hit .344 in the stanza while holding the Tritons to a .108 attack percentage. Sarah Pyle and Lexi Theis combined for half of Rockhurst's 14 kills in the set.
UMSL led for most of the swing set and were up 24-19 after a kill from Santel but the Hawks fought off five straight points to tie it at 24 on a kill from Pyle.
Iyannah Jackson put the Tritons back in front with a kill and then Santel served out the set with an ace to win it 26-24.
The fourth set was the tightest of the match featuring 10 ties and four lead changes. The two sides kept trading points until Rockhurst ran off three straight points to move ahead 19-17. UMSL responded in a huge fashion scoring seven straight points with Weaver serving six of them to reach match point at 24-19. Weaver had two aces in the run while Santel added a kill and a block.
The Hawks fought off the first match point with a kill from Delaney Hope but not a second as Santel terminated a ball to end the match.
The Tritons hit .207 for the contest with 60 kills against 26 errors in 164 swings and were led by Santel with a match-high 21 kills. Johnson and Jackson added 16 and 11 kills respectively. Bishop had a double-double with 49 assists and 17 digs while Weaver had a match-high 18 digs. Jackson finished with two blocks.
Rockhurst had an attack percentage of .183 with 45 kills against 21 errors in 131 attempts. Pyle led the Hawks with 16 kills. Molly Trachta had 21 assists and 10 digs and Hope finished with six total blocks.
UMSL will be the number one seed in next weekend's GLVC Tournament and will take eighth seeded Lewis in a first round match at 11:30 a.m. at Williamsville High School Fieldhouse in Williamsville, Ill.
