WILLIAMSVILLE, Ill. – The No. 25 University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team defeated UIndy in four sets on Saturday afternoon at the Williamsville High School Fieldhouse in Williamsville, Ill. The Tritons improve to 25-4 and advance to Sunday's championship match while the Greyhounds drop to 20-11 and await word if they'll receive an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament.
UMSL will be making its fourth appearance in the GLVC Championship match in seven seasons and will strive for its first conference championship in program history as it'll face third seeded Quincy at noon at the Williamsville High School Fieldhouse.
The opening set was one of runs as the Tritons, seeded first, jumped out to a 3-0 lead but UIndy, seeded fourth, countered with three straight of their own to tie it. UMSL retook the lead with a 4-0 spurt but the Hounds answered with an 8-1 run to take a 12-8 lead after a kill from Maddie Lynch.
The Tritons still trailed 15-12 when it went on a 6-1 run to take an 18-16 lead on a kill from
Alayna Santel. UIndy rallied to even the set at 22 after a kill from Makenzie Pflederer but wouldn't retake the lead as UMSL scored the final three points to take the frame 25-22.
The Tritons led 14-11 in the second set but couldn't overcome an 8-2 run from the Greyhounds as they took a 19-16 lead on a kill from Paige Parlanti. UMSL pulled to within 20-19 on a kill from
Bridget Cassady but couldn't retake the lead as UIndy scored five of the final eight points to win the set 25-22 and even the match at a set apiece.
The Tritons trailed 19-16 in the swing set but closed it on a 9-0 run to win 25-16 to take the 2-1 lead.
Maggie Johnson had a two kills and a block in the run while
Iyannah Jackson added a kill and a block. UMSL hit .306 in the stanza with 16 kills and were led by Johnson with five.
The Tritons led by four midway through the final frame but the Hounds wouldn't go quietly going on a 5-3 run to pull within 23-21 after a kill from Riley Laine. However, UMSL was able to close out the match with a kill from
Hannah Copeland setting up match point and then Santel and Jackson blocked Parlanti to seal the victory.
The Tritons finished the match hitting .291 with 69 kills against 19 errors in 172 swings and had four players reach double figures in kills led by Santel with 19. Johnson added 16, Cassady finished with 14 and Copeland dropped in 10.
Caitlin Bishop had a double-double with 55 assists and 13 digs, Jackson added seven total blocks and
Skylar Weaver finished with 15 digs.
UIndy hit .242 for the contest with 60 kills against 23 errors in 153 attempts and were led by Parlanti with 19 while Lynch and Kaitlin Fasbender added 15 and 10 kills respectively. Carly Fonda had 48 assists, Pflederer had five total blocks and Parlanti added 15 digs.
