ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team extended its winning streak to 14 with a 3-0 win over McKendree on Chuck Smith Court at the Mark Twain Building on Friday evening. The Tritons improve to 21-4, 11-0 GLVC while the Bearcats drop to 5-20, 3-8 GLVC.
UMSL got off to a slow start falling behind 4-0 to start the match and still trailed 7-5 when it made its run scoring seven of the next nine points to erase the deficit and take a 14-9 lead after a kill from
Hannah Copeland.
The lead grew to as many as 10 at 22-12 after a kill from
Iyannah Jackson. McKendree wouldn't go quietly scoring four of the next six points to pull within 24-16 but wouldn't get any closer as a kill from
Maggie Johnson gave the Tritons the 25-16 opening set victory.
UMSL hit .273 in the stanza and was led by Johnson with four kills while Copeland
, Alayna Santel and
Bridget Cassady had three kills apiece.
The Tritons again found themselves in an early hole trailing the middle frame 4-1 before dominating the rest of the way outscoring the Bearcats 24-8 to win 25-12 and take the commanding 2-0 lead. UMSL hit .483 in the set with 16 kills against two errors and was led by
Addison Voorhees with four kills in five attempts.
The Tritons never trailed in the third stanza jumping out to an 8-2 lead and cruised to the 25-9 victory. UMSL hit .476 in the frame with 12 kills and were led by Santel and Voorhees with three kills each while Johnson, Copeland and
Brooklyn Young had two kills apiece.
The Tritons finished the contest hitting .398 with 43 kills against 10 errors in 83 attempts. Eight different players recorded a kill in the contest led by Johnson and Santel with nine kills apiece. Voorhees and Copeland contributed seven kills each.
Caitlin Bishop handed out 32 assists while Santel finished with three aces and 11 digs.
UMSL's defense held the Bearcats to .023 hitting percentage with 19 kills against 17 errors in 87 attacks. Avery Guisinger led McKendree with six kills, Peyton Uptgraft had 18 assists and Ashlyn Berczynski finished with eight digs.
The Tritons continue their three-game homestand next Friday (Nov. 14) hosting William Jewell at 6 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building. The team will honor seniors
Rylee Edson, Bishop, Jackson and Copeland prior to the start of the match.
