ST. LOUIS -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team dropped a hard fought contest to Michigan Tech 68-62 on Saturday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons drop to 7-2 while the Huskies improve to 7-2.
UMSL traded baskets with Michigan Tech for the first quarter.
Lexi Hanna made a three-point shot midway through the quarter to give the Tritons a two point lead before the Huskies tied it up with a layup.
Jaeda Wilson made two free-throws giving UMSL a 15-13 lead.
Alyssa Wypych tied the game with a layup on the ensuing possession but a pair of free throws from
Mara Rieder gave the Tritons a 17-15 lead.
Michigan Tech closed the quarter strong as it outscored UMSL 8-0 over the final two minutes to take six-point cushion into the second stanza.
The Tritons battled back in the second, going on a six point run midway through the quarter to take a three point lead. Wilson made a three-point shot with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter to make it a two-possession game.
Morgan Ramthun had a three-point play with 47 seconds left in the quarter, scoring a layup and making her free throw to extend the lead to seven points. Michigan Tech scored a layup at the buzzer to cut the Triton lead to five heading into the half.
After the half, UMSL's shooting from the floor went cold.
Anna Costa Riera scored a jumper in the paint to open the scoring with 9:32 to go in the half. That would be the Tritons only field goal of the quarter as they wouldn't score another basket from the floor until 7:34 in the fourth quarter. Instead, the Tritons went 8-8 from the free-throw line to keep the game within reach.
Ramthun scored the layup to break the UMSL's cold streak followed by a three-point make from
Jayden Kuper to cut the Huskies lead to two points. Rieder scored a jump shot to tie the score with nearly six minutes to go in the final quarter.
Michigan Tech answered with a seven-point run stretching its lead to seven points and then traded baskets with the Tritons to run out the game. Costa Riera made a fast break layup with nine seconds to left for the final margin.
UMSL ended the game shooting 41 percent (21-for-51) from the field including 5-of-17 from three and shot 94 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded the Huskies 36-to-27 but committed 18 turnovers leading to 17 points for Tech.
Rieder led all scorers with a game-high 20 points in the contest and added 12 rebounds for another double-double. Hanna added 15 points while Ramthun finished with seven points and 11 rebounds.
Michigan Tech shot 45 percent (26-for-58) from the floor including 6-of-16 from three and shot 77 percent at the foul line. It had 11 assists and seven steals. Ella Mason led three Huskies in double figures with 18 points.
The Tritons host Central Missouri in their final home game of 2025 on Monday (Dec. 15) at 5 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
