INDIANAPOLIS -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team picked up their second road win of the weekend with a 60-43 victory over UIndy at Nicoson Hall on Saturday afternoon. The Tritons improve to 6-1, 3-0 GLVC while the Greyhounds are 0-8, 0-3 GLVC.
UMSL got off to a fast start outscoring the Hounds 18-6 in the first quarter as it shot close to 50 percent in the opening stanza and led by as many as 14 in the opening stanza. The Tritons led 7-4 before breaking it open with an 11-0 surge over the final five minutes of the quarter.
Lexi Hanna had six points in the stanza while
Mara Rieder added five more points.
UMSL opened the second frame on a 10-2 run to build its largest lead of the afternoon at 28-8 after a pair of free throws from
Jayden Kuper with 5:36 left in the opening half. UIndy got going offensively over the final five minutes as it closed the half on a 12-2 run to cut the Triton lead to 30-22 at the half.
The Greyhounds carried that momentum into the third quarter outscoring UMSL 16-8 over the first nine minutes of the stanza to tie the game at 38 on a three-point shot from Amyrah Sapenter. The Tritons never relinquished the lead as
Anna Costa Riera gave them the lead right back with a second chance bucket after
Morgan Ramthun kept the possession alive with an offensive rebound.
Mireia Casas gave UMSL a four-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes scoring on a putback off a Kuper miss in transition.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Tritons as they opened it on a 12-2 run to extend its lead back to double digits. Rieder had six points in that game deciding run while Kuper chipped in with four points.
UIndy cut the deficit to 11 on another Sapenter three with 2:36 left but wouldn't get any closer as UMSL scored the final six points of the contest to secure the victory.
The Tritons finished the game shooting 44 percent (24-for-55) from the field but were 3-of-23 from three and shot 64 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded the Hounds 43-to-27 and had 14 assists on 24 made baskets. Rieder had a game-high 18 points while Kuper finished with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Ramthun added 11 points and eight boards. Costa Riera dished out seven assists.
UIndy was held to 30 percent (15-for-50) shooting in the contest including 4-of-13 from three and shot 64 percent at the foul line. Patricia Chikamba led the Hounds with 14 points while Sapenter dropped in 13 points.
UMSL concludes its three-game road trip on Tuesday (Dec. 9) traveling over to Maryville to take on the crosstown rival Saints at 5:15 p.m. at Moloney Arena.
