Baseball Tops Bison to Move to 2-0

EDMOND, Okla. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team picked up its second straight win to start the season defeating Oklahoma Baptist 14-4 in eight innings on Saturday at the Edmond First Pitch Classic at Wendell Simmons Field in Edmond, Okla. The Bison fall to 0-2 on the season.

OBU struck first with two runs in the first inning. After the first two were retired DJ Van Atten doubled to right center and scored on Zane Bennett's single up the middle. After an error put runners on the corner, the Bison executed a double steal with Bennett scoring from third for the second run.

The Tritons countered in the second scoring three runs on two hits and two errors. UMSL had the bases loaded with one out with Justin Simard at the plate. He hit a ground ball to second that resulted in a throwing error by the second baseman trying to turn a double play allowing three runs to score.

OBU came right back in the bottom of the frame with two more runs. Braden Smith led off the inning with a single to short and scored on Matt Marsic's triple to left center. Marsic scored on Jayden Shafer's one out single through the right side.

UMSL retook the lead with four runs in the third. Cade Grevengoed tied the game with a sacrifice fly and Noah Tomaras's hit a three-run homer to left for the lead.

Barrett Rose reached on a fielder's choice as a throwing error by the first baseman allowed Jake Isaacs and Cooper Blythe to score to make it 9-4. Andrew Buescher followed with a two-run double to left center that drove in Rose and Braedon Stoakes.

UMSL added single insurances run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly from Isaacs, in the seventh on Blythe's RBI single up the middle and the eighth as Rose stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

That was all the run support that RJ Elmore needed as he went the first five innings allowing four runs, three earned on nine hits with seven strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season. Cale Willson pitched two scoreless innings and Will Newberry tossed one scoreless frame.

The Tritons had 10 hits in the contest and were led by Blythe with three while Buescher added two.
