ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped in a 65-54 loss to Lewis at Neil Carey Arena on Thursday night. The Tritons drop to 16-5, 10-4 GLVC while the Flyers improve to 18-2, 12-1 GLVC.
It was a slow start for UMSL, who didn't get on the scoreboard until
Mara Rieder hit a jump shot with 5:27 seconds left in the opening stanza. Lewis hit nine of its first 11 shots from the floor to take a 19-2 lead. The Tritons scored the final five points of the frame as
Abby Peterson hit a three-pointer with two minutes left and
Emerson Weller knocked down a jumper with 1:38 left in the quarter.
UMSL started the second quarter with three quick points to pull within single digits before once again going cold.
Morgan Ramthun had five points in the second quarter, the most of any Triton.
A combination of fast break points and fouls on made layups helped Lewis extend its lead to as many as 22 points at 41-19 at the break.
UMSL heated up midway through the third quarter making four of its last five shots from the floor and was 6-of-7 at the foul line but the Flyers still led by 20 heading into the final quarter.
It was a strong defensive effort for the Tritons in the final quarter, keeping Lewis off the scoreboard until less than five minutes remained in the frame.
At the 3:33 mark of the fourth quarter,
Kate Rolfes hit a three-point shot to cross the 1,000-career points threshold.
Rieder kept UMSL in the game offensively. When she couldn't find the basket, she often drew the foul. She had 11 points in the final quarter to help UMSL close the deficit to 11 points.
The Tritons shot 31 percent (19-for-62) from the field but was 3-of-14 from beyond the arc and shot 57 percent (13-for-23) from the free-throw line. Rieder finished with a season-high 18 points, four rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Ramthun had 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Flyers shot 43 percent (23-for-53) from the field, was 4-of-16 from three, and shot 94 percent (15-for-16) from the free-throw line. Taylor Gugliuzza led Lewis with 15 points, five rebounds, and one steal. Jenna Badali had 12 points and six rebounds.
UMSL wraps up its road trip on Saturday as it heads to the Circle City to take on the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds at 12 p.m. (CST) at Nicoson Hall.
