ST. CHARLES, Mo. – It took an extra five minutes but the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team overcame a seven-point second half deficit to seventh seeded Rockhurst 77-70 in overtime on Thursday afternoon in a GLVC Quarterfinal contest at Hyland Arena in St. Charles, Mo. The Tritons improve to 18-10 while the Hawks finish their season with a record of 17-12.
The two sides traded baskets for the first six-plus minutes of the contest before UMSL, seeded second, took control thanks to a 20-7 run that saw it extend its lead to 33-17 after a three-pointer from
Matt Enright with 5:39 remaining in the half.
Rockhurst battled back cutting the deficit to 36-26 three minutes later but the Tritons scored four of the final six points of the stanza to take a 12-point lead into the locker room at the break.
The Hawks came out on fire to start the second half hitting six of their first eight shots including a pair of threes to grab its first lead since early in the contest with 14:49 to play. That lead grew to seven but UMSL rallied thanks to a 10-4 run to close within 61-60 after a jumper from
Janeir Harris with 5:25 left in the contest.
Rockhurst got a layup from Jesse White and two free throws from Brian Hawthorne to extend its lead to five a minute later.
The Hawks still led by five with less than 2:30 to go after a layup from Hawthorne but would go scoreless for the remainder of regulation.
Troy Glover II scored on a jumper in the paint and Enright made 1-of-2 free throws to make it a two-point game with 1:13 left.
The Tritons got a stop forcing Nick Arensberg into a contested three with the shot clock winding down and the rebound went out of bounds to UMSL.
Emanuel Prospere II drove to the basket and laid it in with 0:15 remaining to tie the game at 67.
Rockhurst had a chance to win the game but Hawthorne's fade away jumper on the baseline was short and Enright got the rebound to send the game to overtime.
In the extra period the Tritons scored the first seven points and held the Hawks scoreless for the first 3:30 before a free throw from Hawthrone broke the spell.
Forced to foul, Rockhurst sent Prospere to the line where he hit 1-of-2 two to extend the lead back to seven. The Hawks countered on the other end as Hawthorne hit a jumper in the lane to make it a five-point contest.
UMSL sealed the win on two free throws from
Savon Wykle with 0:25 left.
The Tritons finished the game shooting 48 percent (29-for-60) from the floor but were 6-of-17 from three and shot 65 percent at the foul line. Prospere finished with a game-high 26 points while Enright added 22 and Wykle dropped home 11. Prospere also added nine rebounds and three assists.
Rockhurst shot 39 percent (25-for-65) from the field but were only 1-of-8 in overtime. It shot 29 percent from three and was 13-for-17 at the foul line. Jaylen Wesley was one of four Hawk players to reach double figures with 19 points. He was joined by Hawthorne with 18 while Dan Carr and White had 14 and 10 respectively.
UMSL will take on the winner of the game between sixth seeded Truman State and third seeded Upper Iowa on Saturday afternoon at 2:15 p.m. at Hyland Arena in St. Charles, Mo.
