ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team won both ends of its doubleheader at Missouri S&T 8-0 and 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Ballpark at S&T. The Tritons improve to 12-6, 2-1 GLVC while the Miners drop to 7-5, 1-2 GLVC.
Game 1 – UMSL S&T 0
UMSL scored the first run of the game in the second inning on
Dane Stevenson's RBI single through the right side of the infield scoring
Mitch Bonczkowski. The Tritons added to their lead in the fourth on
Cade Grevengoed's three-run home run to make it 4-0.
UMSL got single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings and added two more in the sixth to break it open.
Braedon Stoakes drove in a run with a ground out to short in the fourth. Grevengoed picked up his fourth RBI of the day with a single up in the middle in the fifth scoring
Luke Saxton. The Tritons final two runs in the sixth came on a sacrifice fly from Stoakes and an RBI single from
Andrew Buescher.
That was all the run support
Bryce Nicolay needed as he tossed a complete game shutout to earn his first collegiate win. He struck out a career-high eight batters while allowing two hits and a walk.
UMSL had 11 hits in the contest and were led by Grevengoed and
Barrett Rose with two apiece.
Game 2 – UMSL 4 S&T 1
The Tritons struck first in the second game of the twinbill as Rose drove in
Jake Isaacs with a double down the right field line. UMSL's second run of the inning came on a groundout to short scoring Stoakes.
S&T got a run back in the sixth as Andrew Hedgecourth walked with the bases loaded to bring home Nick Krodinger but
Cody Brooks got Alexander DiGiacinto to line out to right to end the inning and preserve the lead.
The Tritons added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on an RBI single from Rose and a sacrifice fly from Buescher.
Garrett Brunstetter worked out of a jam in the seventh to nail down his first save of the season and secure the win for
Dustin Hagens. Hagens went the first 5.2 innings giving up one run on two hits with eight strikeouts while walking three to improve to 1-1 on the year.
UMSL had seven hits in the contest and were led by Rose with three.
The Tritons and Miners wrap up their four-game series with a single game on Sunday starting at noon at the Ballpark at S&T.
