ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team fell just short of the GLVC Championship, falling 58-51 to Lincoln on Sunday afternoon at Hyland Arena in St. Charles, Mo. The Tritons are now 19-11 while the Blue Tigers improve to 23-8.
The first half saw UMSL and Lincoln trade baskets to open play.
Savon Wykle scored early to open the scoring and
Troy Glover II added a dunk and a turn around two-point effort before the Tritons offense went quiet.
UMSL trailed by as many as nine points at the halfway point of the stanza. Free throw shooting kept the Tritons within striking distance before
Matt Enright hit back-to-back jumpers to pull UMSL within two points with two minutes remaining.
Glover came up with the defensive rebound and found
Emanuel Prospere II for a three-point effort to give the Tritons the lead. UMSL came up with the defensive stop on the next play and Wykle made two of his three free throws to extend the Triton lead to three points.
The Blue Tigers answered with a three-point make on their next possession and blocked Prospere's shot at the buzzer to send the teams into the locker room tied at 29-29.
Lincoln regained the lead scoring the first eight points of the second half before Prospere made both free-throws to give the Tritons their first points of the frame.
Free-throws once again kept UMSL close to the Blue Tigers before Glover made a dunk five minutes into the second to kick off a seven-point UMSL run of their own.
An Enright three followed by an
Iziah Purvey layup pulled the Tritons even with just over seven minutes to go. Unfortunately, UMSL couldn't manage to get in front of Lincoln as the Blue Tigers made a layup to regain the lead.
Down three with forty seconds left, the Tritons couldn't get their shots to land and were forced to foul Lincoln who made their free throws down the stretch to clinch the victory.
UMSL was held to 36.4 percent (16-for-44) shooting from the floor in the contest including 5-of-12 from three and shot 70 percent at the foul line. Enright finished with 14 points and was joined by Prospere and Glover with 13 and 11 points respectively.
The Blue Tigers shot 39 percent (22-for-57) from the field in the game, were 7-of-24 from three and shot 70 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded the Tritons 36-to-32. Andreas Fuller finished with a game-high 19 points while Tyler Chapman added 16 more.
