ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's tennis team defeated Quincy 5-2 on Tuesday at the UMSL Tennis Courts. The Tritons improve to 6-5 while the Hawks fall to 9-6.
The two sides began the dual match splitting the first two doubles matches with UMSL's number one team of
Tanin Ramnath and
Percy Siercke beating Inigo Villacampa and Joseph Restrepo 6-2 while Quincy's number two team of Gianni Lopez and Rodrigo Coello Trevino beat
Alejandro Ley and
Joan Garros 6-3. The doubles point came down to the final match with the Tritons number three team of
Bautista Rooney and
Jose Yañez knocking off Gerard Abad Puig and Marko Cucuk 6-4.
UMSL won two of the first three singles matches to take a 3-1 lead in the match. Ramnath won in straight sets over Restrepo 6-1, 6-2 at number two singles while Siercke defeated Lopez 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) in the third singles match. Ley dropped a hard-fought match to Villacampa 6-7 (4-7), 5-7 in the first singles bout.
Quincy cut the Tritons lead to 3-2 as Puig defeated Garros 7-6 (10-8), 6-0 but UMSL won the final two singles matches to clinch the victory. Rooney beat Trevino 6-2, 6-3 at number five singles and Yañez
knocked off Pablo Mateos Niella 6-0, 6-2 in the final singles competition.
The Tritons return to the courts on Friday as they travel down to Bolivar, Mo., to take on Southwest Baptist at 2 p.m. at the Bryant Tennis Center.
