KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team concluded the regular season splitting its final doubleheader against Truman State on Sunday at Truman Softball Park in Kirksville, Mo. The Bulldogs won game one 11-5 while the Tritons took the nightcap 8-6.
GAME 1 - TRUMAN 11 UMSL 5
Truman State (26-25, 14-14 GLVC) opened the scoring with five runs on six hits in the home half of the first. Nina Fenasci doubled to right center to bring in the first run. The Emily Wood doubled the other way to score Fenasci. Charlotte Chelich doubled with two outs to bring to drive in the third run and then back-to-back singles up the middle brought home the final two runs.
UMSL answered with three runs in the second inning.
May Pasqualini hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring
Megan Russell. Then
Jamie Widule doubled to left center to score another run.
Simia Spahiev hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to score
Julia Sandles for the final run of the second.
The Bulldogs added two runs in the fifth inning when Caragan Baker tripled to right field, scoring Madi McCarty. The second run scored on a foul out to second base, as Baker scored on the play.
The Tritons cut the lead back to two in the top of the sixth. Sandles put the ball in play, reaching on a fielding error that allowed
Rylie Buchanan to score. Then Pasqualini singled to left field, scoring Sandles.
Truman sealed the victory with four runs in the sixth.
UMSL was outhit in game one 14-9 and led by Pasqualini, Buchanan and
Hannah Tomlianovich with two apiece.
Ashely Borowitz took the loss in the circle giving up seven runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts in five innings pitched to end the season 10-10.
GAME 2 - UMSL 8 TRUMAN 6
The Tritons jumped out to the early lead in the nightcap with two runs on two hits in the top of the first. Tomlianovich doubled home Pasqualini with the first run and
Gwyn Miller hit a two-out single to center scoring Tomlianovich.
The Bulldogs tied the game with two runs in the home half of the first and had the bases loaded with no one out but
Lexi Sherrick kept the game tied getting a caught stealing of home and back-to-back outs to end the frame.
UMSL retook the lead in the second scoring five runs on two hits and three errors. Widule drove in a run on a fielding error by the shortstop and Miller capped the inning with a two-run single to center.
Truman got a run in the bottom of the frame and two more in the fifth to cut the Triton lead to 7-5.
The Tritons tacked on an insurance run in the sixth as Widule hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Sandles.
The Bulldogs final run came on a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
