ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's tennis team came up short in a 4-1 loss against Drury on Saturday at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo. The Tritons are now 7-4 on the season while the Panthers are 8-4.
Drury won the first two doubles contests as its number three team of Franca Piaggi and Eliana Weichel defeated UMSL's number three team of
Giuliana Cunza and
Lauren Sweeney 6-2. The Panthers top doubles team of Ewa Samberger and Leana Chanove, ranked No. 9 in Division II, beat the Tritons number one team of
Hannah Tse and
Aleksandra Lopez 7-5 to clinch the first point of the contest. UMSL's number two doubles team of
Anna Favaron and
Morgan Lint defeated Antanina Novik and Ana Rosa 7-6 in a tiebreak.
In singles play, Tse, ranked No. 15 in Division II, lost in straight sets Samberger 6-2, 6-1 at number one singles. In the number three singles match it was Wichel defeating Favaron 6-3, 6-2. Lint got the Tritons on the board with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Rosa at No. 4 singles.
The number two singles match between Lopez and Novik went the distance. Lopez won the first set 7-6 (7-4) but Novik won the second set 6-4 to extend it to a third set. The final set was tied at 6-6 and went to a tiebreak. Novik jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the tiebreak but Lopez answered scoring five straight points to take a 7-6 lead and had a chance to serve out the match but Novik won the final three points to win the tiebreak 9-7 and the set 7-6. The final two singles matches were unfinished.
UMSL returns to the courts on Friday (April 11) hosting Illinois Springfield at 2 p.m. at the UMSL Tennis Courts.
