ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team kept its postseason hopes alive splitting a doubleheader against Maryville on Friday afternoon at Weber Field on the Maryville campus. The Tritons game one of the doubleheader 6-0 while the Saints took the nightcap 7-2.
UMSL is 26-22, 15-15 GLVC while Maryville is 29-19, 21-9 GLVC. The win for the Tritons snapped a 10-game losing streak against the Saints.
Game 1 – UMSL 6 Maryville 0
UMSL got RBI singles from
Cade Grevengoed and
Garrett Strenger in the second to take a 2-0 lead.
Zach Haygood worked out of a jam in the third to keep the Tritons in front.
UMSL extended its lead in the sixth scoring four runs on five hits and an error.
Cooper Blythe made it 3-0 with a single to center scoring
Mitch Bonczkowski. Strenger followed with a double to right center scoring Blythe and
Andrew Buescher.
Owen Polly brought home the final run with squeeze bunt up the first base line scoring Strenger.
Maryville got singles in the eighth and ninth innings but were unable to bring them in.
Haygood turned in his best start of the season throwing a complete game shutout allowing only three hits while striking out two and walking four on 114 pitches. He got 19 outs in the air and five on the ground. He picked up the win to improve to 4-1 on the season.
The Tritons had 10 hits in the contest and were led by Bonczkowski, Grevengoed and Strenger with two hits each.
Game 2 – Maryville 7 UMSL 2
The Saints took the early lead on Camden Ruby's two-run home run to left center with two out in the top of the first. UMSL had a runner in scoring position in each of the first two innings but were unable to break through until the third on
Barrett Rose's two-run double down the left field line scoring
Dane Stevenson and
Braedon Stoakes.
Maryville retook the lead in the fifth on Dominic Sharp's two-run home run to right. The Saints sealed the victory with three runs in the seventh. Sharp hit a two-run double down the left field line and Ruby hit a sacrifice fly to left center.
Maryville outhit the Tritons 10-8 in the nightcap. UMSL was led offensively by Grevengoed with five hits while Rose added two hits.
Bryce Nicolay took the loss giving up four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk in five innings pitched to fall to 4-3.
The Tritons and Saints wrap up their four-game series with another doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. at the UMSL Baseball Field.
