Women’s Tennis Season Ends With Narrow Loss To Drury In GLVC Quarterfinal Contest

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's tennis team fought until the end but came up short losing to Drury 4-3 in the quarterfinal round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference women's tennis tournament on Friday afternoon at Sacred Heart Griffin High School in Springfield, Ill.

The Panthers (14-5), seeded second in the GLVC West, will advance to Saturday's semifinal and will take on UIndy the top seed from the GLVC East.

The Tritons and Drury split the first two doubles matches as the Panthers number three team of Franca Piaggi and Eliana Weichel defeated UMSL's duo of Giuliana Cunza and Lauren Sweeney 6-1. The Tritons evened it 1-1 as Anna Favaron and Morgan Lint knocked off Antanina Novik and Ana Rosa 6-2. It came down to the number one doubles match with the No. 28 ranked team of Ewa Samberger and Leana Chanove beat Hannah Tse and Aleksandra Lopez 7-6 (7-4) to clinch the doubles point.

Lint won her singles match over Weichel 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 singles to even the match at 1-1. The Panthers got wins at No. 6 singles and No. 1 singles to retake the lead at 3-1 but UMSL rallied getting wins from Cunza 6-4, 6-0 over Rosa at No. 5 singles and Lopez defeated Chanove 6-4, 6-4 to even the match at 3-3.

It came down to No. 3 singles between Favaron and Novik. Favaron won the first set 6-3 but Novik rallied winning the next two sets 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the victory for Drury.

The Tritons, seeded third in the GLVC East, finish their season with a record of 10-7 including 3-2 in GLVC East Divisional play.
