ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team defeated Southwest Baptist 1-0 for its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon at Don Dallas Field. The Tritons improve to 1-1-3, 1-0-2 GLVC while the Bearcats are 3-4, 0-3 GLVC.
SBU dominated the early portion of the game outshooting UMSL 7-3 but each side had two shots on target.
The momentum began to shift in the final 15 minutes of the half with the Tritons starting to generate more chances. It culminated with a penalty kick in the 38th minute.
Colton Milosch won a ball at the edge of the penalty area and was pulled down in the box.
Alexander Ramirez Aoueiss stepped up to the spot and beat Jan-Henry Schafer inside the left post for his second goal of the season.
UMSL had a chance to add on just before halftime but
Solomon Wanyonyi missed a shot just wide.
The Tritons had two great chances to extend the lead early in the second half.
Roman Ryabchenko fired a shot from the top of the box through traffic but Schafer saw it and turned it away. Five minutes later Wanyonyi was denied by Schafer.
Ryabchenko had one more chance but was again denied by Schafer in the 83rd minute.
SBU made a late push but
Jack Franklin came up big to preserve the clean sheet and earn his first collegiate win and shutout.
UMSL outshot the Bearcats 17-9 in the contest including 8-3 in shots on goal. Ramirez Aoueiss put all three of his shots on target while Ryabchenko, Wanyonyi,
Max Matarelli, Kyler Sorber and
Connor Randel had two shots each. Franklin made three saves in goal.
The Tritons return to the pitch this Friday (Sept. 26) as they head to Rolla, Mo., to take on Missouri S&T at 7:30 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field.
