ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team got a balanced attack in its 3-0 win over Southwest Baptist at the Meyer Sports Center on Saturday afternoon in Bolivar, Mo. The Tritons improve to 9-4, 2-0 GLVC while the Bearcats fall to 3-10, 0-2 GLVC.
UMSL hit .316 for the match with 46 kills against 15 errors in 98 attempts.
Alayna Santel led the way with 11 kills while
Iyannah Jackson and
Hannah Copeland had 10 kills apiece.
The Tritons trailed a total of three times in the match.
The opening set went back-and-forth with UMSL holding a 13-12 lead before beginning to pull away thanks to a 4-1 run. SBU used a run of its own to claw back within 18-16 but wouldn't be able to get any closer as the Tritons finished the frame scoring seven of the final 10 points to take it 25-19.
UMSL had 16 kills in the stanza and were led by
Maggie Johnson with five while Santel and Copeland added four each.
The middle frame was even at nine when the Tritons took charge thanks to an 8-1 run as Copeland provided the spark with three kills and a block with Santel. Santel also added a kill and
Lydia Hartman contributed an ace. The Bearcats wouldn't get closer than six points the remainder of the set as UMSL pulled away for the 25-13 victory.
The Tritons hit .333 in the final stanza and never trailed as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead and led by as many as 12 points. SBU tried to make a late run but it wouldn't be enough as UMSL cruised to the 25-14 victory.
Jackson had five kills in the frame with Santel contributing four while Copeland,
Bridget Cassady and
Addison Voorhees had two apiece.
Caitlin Bishop finished the match with 41 assists, six digs and an ace, Santel had four aces and three total blocks and
Skylar Weaver had a match-high 17 digs.
The Triton defense held the Bearcats to a .106 attack percentage and allowed a season-low 22 kills in the match.
UMSL hosts Illinois Springfield in its home opener next Friday (Oct. 3) at 6 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
