BOLIVAR, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak with a 78-46 win against Southwest Baptist at the Meyer Sports Center on Saturday afternoon in Bolivar, Mo. The Tritons improve to 10-7, 4-4 GLVC while the Bearcats slip to 9-6, 3-4 GLVC.
UMSL entered Saturday's contest struggling from the three-point line going 6-for-32 in its last two games but snapped out of its drought matching its season-high with 16 made threes in the contest.
Makeer Makeer got the Tritons off on the right foot knocking down back-to-back threes to start the game as UMSL jumped out to a 6-0 lead. The Triton defense was stingy holding SBU without a field goal for the first 10 minutes and just four free throws as they built an early 13-point lead and never saw the lead drop below double digits.
UMSL shot 50 percent (14-for-28) from the floor in the opening half including 9-of-18 from three and were led by
Colby Dolphin with 15 points while Makeer added 11 and
Vincent Davis III had eight points.
Dolphin's buzzer-beater at the end of the first half gave the Tritons their largest lead of the half at 41-15.
UMSL opened the second half on an 11-4 run to extend its lead to 52-19 after a three-pointer from
Taye Moore.
The Bearcats cut the Triton advantage to 20 thanks to a 13-0 run in the span of five minutes but wouldn't get any closer as UMSL answered with a 20-8 run to extend its lead back to 30+ on Dolphin's seventh trey of the contest with less than four minutes to play.
The Tritons finished the game shooting 46 percent (26-for-57) from the field including 16-of-38 from three and shot 91 percent at the foul line. They finished with 19 assists on 26 made field goals and forced 19 turnovers with 11 steals.
Dolphin finished with a game-high 21 points and was joined in double figures by Davis with 14 while Makeer and Moore added 13 points each. Davis and
Demetris Phillips had seven rebounds apiece and
Miles Boland dished out seven assists.
SBU was held to 36 percent (17-for-47) shooting from the floor in the contest, was 1-of-12 from three but shot 92 percent at the foul line. Leo Gayma led the Bearcats with 11 points while Zac Reedus finished with 10 points. Gayman had a game-high nine rebounds.
UMSL returns home on Thursday (Jan. 15) beginning a three-game homestand against No. 16 Missouri S&T at 7:45 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
