ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team lead for 33 minutes in its game against No. 12 Missouri S&T before falling 84-81 on Chuck Smith Court at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons drop to 10-8, 4-5 GLVC while the Miners move to 12-2, 6-1 GLVC.
UMSL got off to a great start knocking down five of its first six field goal attempts including a pair of threes to jump out to a 16-4 lead 4:27 into the contest. The Tritons had a rough stretch over the next 4:30 going 1-of-3 from the floor and had five turnovers to let S&T back into the contest.
Andrew Young kept the Miners afloat in the first scoring 15 of his 27 points on 5-for-7 shooting but everyone else on S&T combined to go 4-of-25 from the field.
UMSL got its offense on track again finishing the opening 20 minutes shooting 58 percent (15-for-26) from the floor including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. The Tritons led by as many as 15 on three different occasions in the stanza and were led by
Vincent Davis III with 12 points while
Miles Boland and
Demetris Phillips added nine points each.
The Miners opened the second half on a 14-4 run to cut UMSL's halftime lead to 44-41 after a three-pointer from Blaise Beauchamp.
The Tritons countered with a 10-5 run to stretch their lead to 54-46 with 11:41 remaining before S&T's Darron Henry got hot from the field. He scored 11 of the Miners' next 17 points during a 17-7 run that saw S&T take a 63-61 lead on a layup from Young with exactly six minutes left.
UMSL retook the lead thanks a to a three-point play from
Jake Hamilton and a three from Davis but couldn't overcome an 11-0 run by the Miners as Beauchamp and Young combined for nine of those points to take its largest lead at 77-67 with 1:23 to go.
The Tritons fought to the end closing to within 84-81 in the final seconds on a layup from Boland but couldn't get the ball back as Beauchamp dribbled out the clock.
UMSL finished the game shooting 52 percent (32-for-62) from the field but was 9-of-26 from three and shot 67 percent at the foul line. Davis led the Tritons with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Boland added 17 points while Hamilton and Moore had 13 and 11 points respectively. UMSL finished with 37-to-28 advantage on the glass but turned the ball over 15 times.
S&T shot a blistering 62 percent from the floor in the second half to finish the game shooting 44 percent (27-for-61) from the floor including 8-of-23 from three and 79 percent at the foul line. Young led all scorers with 28 points while Beauchamp and Herny combined to score 31 of their 37 points in the second half.
The Tritons continue their three-game homestand on Saturday hosting Lincoln at 3:15 p.m. on Chuck Smith Court at the Mark Twain Building.
