ST. LOUIS – In one of its most impressive performances of the season the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team rolled to a 93-60 win over Quincy on Friday evening at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons improve to 9-5, 3-2 GLVC while the Hawks drop to 6-6, 1-3 GLVC.
Demetris Phillips and
Miles Boland each posted double-doubles in the victory and were two of five UMSL players to reach double figures in scoring in the contest.
Phillips recorded game-highs in points (19) and rebounds (11) while adding four assists and two steals while Boland chipped in with 17 points and had a game-high 13 assists. His 13 assists were tied for the second most in a game in school history. The 13 assists were a career-high while his 17 points was one shy of his career best.
Quincy entered Friday evening's contest leading the GLVC in three-point field goal percentage defense at 27 percent but the Tritons came out red hot from three knocking down six of their first eight attempts and would up shooting nearly 70 percent from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes of play.
Despite UMSL's hot shooting, the Hawks hung with the Tritons for the first 12 minutes and only trailed 26-25 after a layup from Lorenzo McMillion Jr.
That would be the closest Quincy got as UMSL finished the opening stanza strong outscoring he Hawks 22-9 the remainder of the half punctuated by Phillips steal and dunk at the end of the stanza to take a 48-34 lead into the half.
The Tritons wouldn't let Quincy get closer than 13 points in the second half as it led by as many as 33 points in the contest.
UMSL's offensive efficiency was just as impressive in the second half shooting 59 percent (16-for-27) from the field including 7-of-13 from three as they finished the game connecting on 35-of-59 field goal attempts for 59.3 percent clip and finished the game at over 60 percent from three.
Eight different players scored in the contest for the Tritons. Phillips and Boland were joined in double figures by
Vincent Davis III with 18 points,
Jake Hamilton added 16 points and
Quenton Parker dropped home 12 points.
UMSL had a 31-to-25 advantage on the glass and had a total of 26 assists on 35 field goals made.
The Hawks shot 44 percent (23-for-52) from the field including 5-of-17 from three and 64 percent at the foul line Camren Kincaid and Max Booher led the way for Quincy with 14 and 12 points respectively.
The Tritons are back at home on Sunday hosting Upper Iowa at 3:15 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
