ST. LOUIS -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team roared to a 72-50 win over Upper Iowa on Sunday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons improve to 10-2, 6-0 GLVC while the Peacocks drop to 7-6, 3-2 GLVC.
UMSL and Upper Iowa traded mini runs in the first quarter with
Jayden Kuper opening the scoring for the Tritons.
With under four minutes to go,
Jaeda Wilson hit back-to-back baskets and
Mara Rieder scored a jumper to give UMSL a seven-point lead. The Peacocks answered with a six-point run before Kuper added another two points to send the Tritons into the second quarter with a three point lead.
It was a back and forth start to the second quarter until the six-minute mark when a
Lexi Hanna three-pointer ignited an eight-point run for UMSL. Upper Iowa managed a jumper before the Tritons finished the quarter with a six-point run, extending the lead to 42-27 heading into the half.
Rieder and
Morgan Ramthun led all scorers with 13 and 11 points respectively while Kuper and Wilson added six points apiece.
The third quarter started slow with neither team finding the basket for the first three minutes. Free throw shooting by Ramthun and Rieder combined with defensive rebounding by Kuper limited the Peacocks shots and helped stretch UMSL's lead to 19.
Upper Iowa strung together runs of four and six points in the fourth, but the Triton extended their lead by finding Rieder and Ramthun in the paint.
Aliya Tripp found the basket for a layup off a steal by
Abby Peterson to give the Tritons a 22-point lead with under a minute in the game.
UMSL finished the game shooting 29-for-69 (42 percent) from the field, was 2-of-16 from the three-point arc and shot 75 percent from the free throw line. The Tritons outrebounded the Peacocks 51-to-36 in the contest and outscored them 46-to-22 in the paint.
Rieder and Ramthun both had double-doubles in the game. Rieder had 24 points, 11 rebounds, and one steal while Ramthun matched her career-high with 21 points while adding 12 rebounds, and one assist.
The Peacocks were 18-for-60 (30 percent) from the floor including 4-of-14 from three and shot 77 percent at the foul line. Ellie Foster led UIU with 11 points while Sydnee Nelson finished with 10 points.
UMSL plays its next two games on the road, starting on Thursday (Jan. 8) against Rockhurst at 5:15 p.m. from Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse in Kansas City.
