Tritons Drop Hard Fought Contest at Lincoln

Jefferson City, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 contest against Lincoln on Wednesday evening at Capital City High School Soccer Field in Jefferson City, Mo. The Tritons drop to 4-5-2, 3-4-2 GLVC while the Blue Tigers are 7-0-3, 6-0-2 GLVC.

Lincoln scored the opening goal of the contest in the 28th minute as Santiago Pineda played a long ball down field. Will Winkler came off his line to play the ball but it took a high bounce over his head and Jerome Lawel put it into the open net for his second goal of the season.

The Blue Tigers held a 7-3 edge in shots including 3-1 in shots on goal in the first 45 minutes.

Lincoln added to its lead in the 64th minutes as Ackeem Mullings took a shot that was saved by Winkler, but he couldn't control it as Lawel corralled the rebound at the back post and scored his second of the contest.

UMSL cut the deficit in half in the 72nd minute. Mason Niedbalski was taken down in the corner of the penalty area resulting in a penalty kick. Mario Garcia converted the spot kick for his third goal of the campaign. Garcia nearly scored the equalizer 10 minutes later, but Vincent Osei made a save.

The Tritons generated one final chance in the final minute as Colson Below sent a shot towards goal that was saved by Osei.

UMSL was outshot in the contest 18-7 including 10-5 in shots on goal. Winkler made a career-high eight saves in the contest.

The Tritons return home on Saturday (Oct. 10) hosting Rockhurst at 7:30 p.m. at Don Dallas Field. The team will honor its three seniors after the match.
