SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis wrapped up its series against Illinois Springfield with a 19-10 loss to the Prairie Stars on Saturday afternoon at the UIS Baseball Field. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to weather and will be made up later in the season.
The Tritons (4-7) jumped out to an early lead scoring three runs in the top of the first.
Garrett Strenger drove in two with a double to center and
Ayden Cline brought home Strenger with a single to right.
UIS (7-3) rallied scoring four times in the second highlighted by Johnny Wendling's single to right that brought home Chris Suchoski and Tommy Atkinson that put the Prairie Stars in front 4-3.
UMSL tied the game in the third as
Brandon Johnson singled to center bringing home Strenger with the tying run.
The Stars countered with six runs in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 13-4 lead.
The Tritons chipped away with a run in the fifth, two more in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth to cut the deficit to 13-10.
UIS put the game away scoring six times in the home half of the eighth to seal the victory.
UMSL outhit the Prairie Stars 16-13 in the contest and was led by Strenger with four hits, matching his career-high, while Cline added three more. Johnson,
Ethan Landis and
Mitch Bonczkowski had two hits apiece.
Will O'Gorman took the loss surrendering seven runs, four earned, on hour hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
The Tritons are scheduled to host Missouri S&T on Wednesday (Feb. 25) at 2 p.m. at the UMSL Baseball Field for its home opener.
