Sullivan Homers In Tritons Loss At Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team got a home run from Kiley Sullivan on Saturday but it wouldn't be enough as it lost to Pittsburg State, 23-0 in five innings and 4-3 at the Pittsburg State Softball Field in Pittsburg, Kan. The Tritons fall to 4-9 while the Gorillas are 15-0.

Game 2 – PSU 4, UMSL 3
PSU struck first, scoring a run in the bottom of the first in the nightcap. Heather Arnett led off with a walk, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Alleyna Rushing.

UMSL rallied in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Jamie Widule led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on Madison Rozanski's single to right tying the game at 1-1. After a fielder's choice, Sullivan hit a two-run home run to right field for her first collegiate home run to put the Tritons on top.

Sasha Buckberger held the Gorillas hitless through 4.2 innings before giving up a bunt single to Arnett but left her stranded as she got Rushing to ground out to her to end the inning.

UMSL had a chance to extend its lead putting two runners on base in the sixth but left them stranded.

Pittsburg State got to Buckberger in the sixth as Lexi Davis hit a three-run home run to left to give the Gorillas the lead.

The Tritons put the go-ahead run in scoring position with two-out in the seventh. May Pasqualini drew a two-out walk in front of Sullivan's double to left but Kaytie Kossina struck out swinging to end the game.

UMSL outhit PSU 7-4 in the contest and was led by Sullivan with three hits who fell short of hitting for the cycle. Buckberger took the loss giving up four runs on four hits with four walks to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Game 1 – PSU 23, UMSL 0 5 innings
The first game of the today was all Gorillas as they sent 16 batters to the plate in the home half of the first scoring 11 runs on five hits and an error. PSU added three more in the second and nine in the third inning.

The Tritons loaded the bases with two out in the fourth but were unable to score as a groundout to third ended the inning.

UMSL was held to four hits in game one and was led by Kossina, Widule, Gracie Philpot and Keira Hayton with one each. Jayla Plotz took the loss in the circle to fall to 0-1 on the season.

The Tritons travel to Marion, Ill., next weekend for The Oasis Division II Collegiate Classic at the Oasis Sports Complex. UMSL will take on Purdue Northwest at 1:30 p.m. and Grand Valley State at 4 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 27).
