No. 24 Women’s Hoops Clinches First Conference Title In School History

ST. LOUIS – The No. 24 University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team defeated William Jewell 82-37 to clinch its conference regular season title in school history on Saturday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons improve to 22-3, 18-1 GLVC while the Cardinals are 1-23, 1-17 GLVC.

WJC scored the first bucket of the game but UMSL responded with seven straight points with five of those coming from Jayden Kuper to take the lead for good. The Cardinals kept it close for the first six minutes but the Tritons went on a 12-2 run over the final 3:30 minutes to take a 21-9 lead into the second quarter.

Morgan Ramthun, Mara Rieder and Kuper combined to score 18 of UMSL's 21 points in the stanza.

The Tritons opened the second quarter on an 18-4 run over the first six minutes of the frame to take its largest lead of the half at 39-13 on a layup from Anna Costa Riera.

William Jewell cut the deficit to 21 with a late run in the quarter sending the teams into the locker with UMSL leading 41-20.

The Tritons continued to control the pace in the third quarter outscoring William Jewell to take a 31-point lead into the final quarter.

UMSL took its largest lead of the contest at 82-37 on its final possession on Abby Peterson's three-pointer.

Six different Tritons scored in the contest led by Rieder with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Ramthun added 22 points and 11 boards and Kuper finished with 13 points and a career-high 17 rebounds.

UMSL shot 47 percent (32-for-68) from the field including 5-of-20 from three and shot 93 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded the Cardinals 52-to-25 and outscored them 48-to-12 in the paint.

William Jewell was held to 26 percent (15-for-57) shooting from the floor including 6-of-27 from and shot 50 percent at the foul line. Jalea Price led the Cardinals with 13 points while Syderah Farmer and Taryn Jacobs had 10 points each.

The Tritons conclude the regular next Thursday (Feb. 26) as they travel to Springfield, Mo., to take on the Drury Panthers at 5:45 p.m. inside the O'Reilly Family Events Center.
