UMSL Women’s Hoops Bounces Back With 64-51 Win Over Greyhounds

ST. LOUIS -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team bounced back from a tough loss last Saturday with a 64-51 win over UIndy on Thursday evening at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons improve to 17-3, 13-1 GLVC while the Greyhounds are now 5-17, 4-10 GLVC.

UMSL started the game with three consecutive stops to keep UIndy off the board. Mara Rieder blocked the third shot attempt to give the Tritons their first possession of the game. A minute later she scored the first points of the game with a layup in the paint.

UMSL went on a 12-point run in the middle of the first, anchored by four points from Anna Costa Riera and four points from Morgan Ramthun to build a 14-3 lead. Ramthun scored a tip-in layup in the final two seconds of the quarter to give the Tritons a nine-point lead heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter saw the Tritons score in bunches. Jayden Kuper hit a three-point make to extend the lead to 14 with just over six minutes to go.

A Reider jumper extended UMSL's lead to 15 points with four minutes to go, but the Tritons offense went quiet the rest of the stanza as the Hounds scored six straight points to cut UMSL's lead to 31-22 at the break. Rieder scored the first four points in the third quarter from the paint before Costa Riera added a three-pointer.

UMSL had a quiet middle stretch but scored six points in the final 50 seconds of the quarter. Kuper had a three-point play with a layup and made free-throw before Costa Riera scored a three-pointer to give the Tritons a 17-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Lexi Hanna started the fourth quarter off with a three-pointer while the Tritons defense kept UIndy off the scoreboard for the first two minutes.

The Greyhounds scored the last 10 points in the game, keeping UMSL's offense quiet for the final three minutes.

UMSL shot 40 percent (25-for-63) from the field, was 4-of-22 from three and shot 77 percent at the foul line. Rieder finished with a double-double scoring a game-high 19 points and added 12 rebounds. Ramthun finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds while Costa Riera scored a career-high 14 points.

UIndy shot 39 percent (20-for-51) from the floor but was 2-of-5 from three and shot 75 percent at the foul line. Autumn Rucker led the way for the Hounds with 11 points while Taylor Van Meter added 10 points off the bench.

The Tritons conclude their two game homestand on Saturday hosting Lewis at 1 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
