ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team got a much needed win as it held on for a 62-58 win over the University of Indianapolis on Thursday evening at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons improve to 13-10 and even their conference record at 7-7 while the Greyhounds fall to 11-11 and 9-5 in the GLVC.
UMSL got off to a good start scoring the first four points of the contest but UIndy countered hitting five of their first seven shots as part of a 14-5 run to build a five-point lead 5:30 into the contest. The Tritons made some adjustments after the first media timeout responding with a 12-2 run over the next 6:30 to build a five-point lead after a three-pointer from
Taye Moore.
The Hounds cut it to one after a traditional three-point play from Shaun Arnold but UMSL never allowed them to regain the lead as it closed the half on a 9-2 run highlighted by
Jake Hamilton's buzzer beating three just before the break to take an eight-point lead into halftime.
The Tritons carried that momentum into the second half as they opened on a 5-2 run to build their largest lead of the game at 40-29 on a layup from Moore.
UIndy answered with a 12-4 run to pull within three on a second chance basket from Arnold with 12:39 remaining.
UMSL stretched its lead back to nine after a jump shot from Moore but couldn't shake the Hounds as they continued fighting their way back into the contest.
UIndy cut the deficit to three after two free throws from Arnold with 3:40 to go.
The Tritons got a big basket from
Miles Boland as he hit a driving layup as the shot clock was about to expire to extend the lead to five with less than two minutes to play. Boland added a free throw on the next possession to extend the lead to two scores but three free throws from Arnold in a span of 0:23 made it a three-point game with under a minute left.
UMSL broke the Greyhounds full court pressure and
Demetris Phillips hit a layup off a pass from Boland to make It a five-point game again. UIndy countered with a three from Carmelo Harris on the right wing with 0:25 to go to cut the margin to 60-58.
The Hounds were forced to foul but were unable to commit the foul as
Makeer Makeer was wide open under the basket and laid it in with 0:11 remaining to clinch the win.
UIndy had a final chance but Tyler Parrish lost the ball trying to go up for a three and Boland came away with it to dribble out the clock for the victory.
The Tritons finished the game shooting 46 percent (26-for-56) from the field but were 6-of-21 from three and shot 36 percent at the foul line. Hamilton finished with a game-high 18 points and was joined in double figures by Moore with 13 points.
The Hounds were held to 32 percent (20-for-62) shooting in the contest including 6-of-23 from three but shot 80 percent at the foul line. Harris led UIndy with 15 points in the contest.
