QUINCY, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team swept its doubleheader against Quincy winning the opener 5-3 and taking the second game 7-3 on Saturday afternoon at QU Baseball Stadium in Quincy, Ill. The Tritons improve to 11-12, 5-2 GLVC while the Hawks drop to 18-9, 7-4 GLVC.
Game 1 – UMSL 5 Quincy 3
Quincy took an early lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. Harry Fandre brought home Isaiah Fudge with a single to left and later in the inning Ben Dahlof hit a sacrifice fly to left scoring Harry Fandre.
UMSL rallied in the third to take a 3-2 lead.
Ethan Landis scored the first run of the frame on a balk and then with two on,
Mitch Bonczkowski drove in
Justin Terhaar and
LJ Randle with a single through the left side of the infield.
The Tritons added a couple of insurance runs in the seventh. Randle brought home
Cade Grevengoed with a single through the left side of the infield and then Bonczkowski made it 5-2 with a sacrifice fly to center scoring Landis.
The Hawks got a run in the home half of the seventh as Jace Figuereo hit a sacrifice fly to left scoring Jack Haggard. Quincy loaded the bases with two outs in the frame but
Dustin Hagens nailed down the save striking out Broughton to end the game for his fourth save of the season.
UMSL had six hits in the contest and was led by Randle and Terhaar with two apiece.
Bryce Nicolay picked up his second straight win giving up three runs on six hits with six strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched to improve to 2-3 on the season.
Game 2 – UMSL 7 Quincy 3
The Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second of game two with three runs on four hits against
Eli Cartwright. Broughton hit a two-run double to left center and Patrick Mendiola added an RBI single through the right side of the infield.
The Tritons got a run back in the fourth as
Brandon Johnson hit an RBI single back up the middle scoring Bonczkowski.
UMSL took the lead with three in the sixth. Bonczkowski tied the game with a two-run home run with no one out in the frame and later in the inning,
Owen Faith brought home
Bennett Cagle with a double to right center.
The Tritons added three insurance runs in the seventh. Bonczkowski hit a two-run home run for the second straight inning and then later in the frame, Landis stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher to make it 7-3.
Hagens came on to start the sixth inning and pitched the final two innings retiring all six hitters he faced to secure the win for Cartwright and lock down his fifth save of the season.
UMSL had eight hits in the contest and was led by Bonczkowski with three while Johnson added two more. Cartwright went the first five innings giving up three runs on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks to improve to 4-1 on the season.
The Tritons and Hawks conclude their four-game series with a single game on Sunday starting at noon at QU Baseball Stadium.
