ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team got to .500 on the season winning the series finale over Southwest Baptist 9-1 on Sunday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field. The Tritons improve to 14-14, 8-4 GLVC while the Bearcats drop to 13-15, 7-9 GLVC.
UMSL jumped out to an early lead just two batters into the game.
Justin Terhaar homered to left center with one out for his second roundtripper of the season.
The Tritons added two more in the second as
Luke Saxton and
Noah Tomaras pulled off a double steal. Saxton came home to score on a throwing error by the catcher to make it 2-0.
LJ Randle added an RBI single back up the middle to make it 3-0.
UMSL scored again in the fifth as
Mitch Bonczkowski singled to left scoring Randle.
SBU cut the lead to 4-1 in the seventh on an RBI single from Beau Honeycutt.
The Tritons scored three times in the seventh to extend its lead to 7-1. Terhaar scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-1 and then Saxton singled to bring home
Owen Faith and
Cade Grevengoed. UMSL put the game away with two more in the eighth on Bonczkowski's two-run home to left to make it 9-1.
The Tritons outhit the Bearcats 14-7 in the contest and were led by Terhaar and Saxton with three apiece while Randle, Bonczkowski and Faith had two each.
Garrett Brunstetter picked up his second win of the weekend as he shut out the Bearcats on one hit through 3.2 innings with three strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season.
UMSL heads to Liberty, Mo., next weekend for a four-game weekend series against William Jewell starting on Thursday (April 2) at 6 p.m. at Talley Stadium on the campus of William Jewell.
