Baseball Takes Two of Three From Chargers

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team picked up its first series win of the season defeating Hillsdale 10-7 on Sunday afternoon at Roy E. Lee Field at Simmons Baseball Complex in Edwardsville, Ill. The Tritons improve to 6-10 while the Chargers drop to 4-9.

UMSL won the final two games to take the best of three series.

The Tritons got on the board with a pair of runs in their first at-bat. Brandon Johson drove in Garrett Strenger with a sacrifice fly to right and Owen Faith dropped down a bunt single to bring home Mitch Bonczkowski.

Hillsdale got RBI singles from Logan Dichler and Aaron Jasiak in the fourth to tie the game 2-2.

UMSL retook the lead with two runs in the fifth on an RBI single from Justin Terhaar and an RBI single from Bonczkowski.

The Chargers tied it with two more in the sixth but the Tritons took the lead for good with three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to make it 9-4.

The teams traded runs in the eighth as Rocco Tenuta had an RBI single to right but Strenger answered in the bottom of the frame leading it off with a home run to left.

Hillsdale made it interesting in the ninth loading the bases with one out and scored two runs but Matt Devoy came out of the pen to get the final out and earn his first collegiate save.

The Tritons had 15 hits in the contest and were led by Bonczkowski with four while Strenger and Simard had three apiece. Will Bellmore picked up his first collegiate win throwing four pitches to get the final out in the sixth inning.

UMSL begins Great Lakes Valley Conference play next weekend hosting Truman State in a four-game series at the UMSL Baseball Field. The teams will play a single game on Friday starting at 2 p.m.
